Sailing brings people together in the most wonderful ways, and can help you to live in the NOW! After a week and nearly 1,100 nm sailed the crew is in the zone. We’ve fallen into a healthy cycle of sleep, eat, watch, and repeat. We’ve shared stories and intimate moments, laughs and meals. And so it’s a very bitter-sweet moment when we realize we have less than 1 day until we arrive in Panama. We make the most of it by hoisting our giant down wind sails on our dual-pole setup. It goes smoothly until a mishap with timing on our fore guy brings the pole flying back ad Jade’s head and gives her a good whack. She powers through and we ice her down, and the reward is the amazing display of flying both head sails powering Delos dead downwind. We have an incredible afternoon of sailing and douse sails just before we’re hit by a line of squalls at night. The crew reflects on what an amazing passage it’s been and how much (or how little) we’re looking forward to exploring Panama!

We’ve been at sea for the better part of a week. The days, nights, and miles under the keel are flowing by at a rapid pace. The seas and winds are building and Delos is slicing through the waves towards our destination, sailing due South towards Panama. The crew officially has their sea legs and tackles some domestic tasks that we wouldn’t dare to in the first few days. Like make a gourmet iced coffee, cook a full scrambled egg breakfast for the entire crew, and some much needed eyebrow sculpturing. Plus lot’s and lot’s of hours spent sailing and staring at the horizen. This video is a glimpse into what it’s like to be on a small boat in the middle of the ocean.

What if the worst nightmare suddenly became a reality? How would you react if you were boarded? It’s day 5 at sea and we’re approaching a critical point in our passage. Our mission thus far is to make as much progress to the East as possible. There are two reasons for this. 1) It puts us further away from the Nicaragua coast and the piracy problems that have plagued these waters. 2) Improves our angle to the wind and comfort level once we turn South towards Panama. As we near our turn I take the crew aside for a briefing about the research Karin and I have done on this area. We talk about our sailing tactics, going dark at night, and how to best prepare ourselves should our worst possible nightmare become a reality.

Have you ever hand steered by the stars and fixed your position with a sextant? It’s day 3 and Delos is gliding along under perfect conditions. We’re hit by a squall under pink silhouetted skies, but it only makes the experience more beautiful. The crew tries hand steering at night by the stars and really begins to understand why sailing can be described as meditative. The next day I break out our sextant and we begin by taking a series of sightings with one purpose- see just how close we can get to our actual GPS position using old navigation techniques that are centuries old. Guess how far off we were?

Imagine jumping into a 12,000 foot deep pool… Only you are in the middle of an ocean and being towed under sail! The conditions are absolutely perfect and Delos is a few hundred miles off shore just drifting along in light winds and calm seas. We decide to show the crew a PERFECT DAY AT SEA 🙂 First off we decide to take the girls up the mast and show them first hand the amazing feeling of being aloft while under full sail. Then I have one of my best ideas ever. With conditions ideal we stop for a mid-ocean swim. With sails deployed all the toys come out and we have a surreal experience flying along under water like Manta Rays in the deep dark blue.

Immigration. Check! Fuel. Check! Provisions. Check! Weather Forecast. Check! The only thing left is to pull up the hook and head out. There’s nothing quite like the feeling just before a passage. It’s a mixture of anxiety and excitement all rolled together, and knowing that you are about to cross 1,000 miles of open ocean with a group of incredibly cool people only makes it that much better. After lashing Maggie to the foredeck we do a crew briefing and planning session, pull up the hook, hoist sail, and set our course East- towards Panama. Spirits are incredibly high and our new crew is in the groove spending their first night at sea. Things don’t always go smoothly as our freezer quits on day 2. But then we get wind to sail and The Little Nugget keeps the crew in shape with one of her exercise routines 🙂

Welcome aboard Jade and JaeCee!!! If you’re ready for ear to ear smiles this episode is for you 🙂 Our crew for Panama is finally complete. It’s really one of those full-circle stories that will make you smile. We met Jade and JaeCee in the Florida Keys. It turns out that Jade and her Dad watched SV Delos episodes when she lived in Ohio. A few years later she bought her own boat and moved to Key West to start a life working on the water. We hit it off with Jade, and her bestie JaeCee, who both worked at the same sailing charter. And now we have a chance to show them both what it’s really like on an offshore passage! We begin by picking them up at the airport with our good friend Juan, who of course decided to do it Nacho Libre style 🙂 We put everyone straight to work checking off our to-do list. We need to get Covid tests, provision Delos, get off the dock, clean the dirty bottom, and inspect the rigging. But we have a TON of fun doing everything.

When the top of your to-do list involves finishing a fresh batch of moonshine life is pretty good right? Well…. Just when I think I’m on top of my game Delos throws a wrench in my plans. The generator starts to overheat. AGAIN. With a weather window looming on the horizon it’s an all out race to troubleshoot the issue and find parts. If we miss this window it could be weeks before another one rolls through. In between troubleshooting the generator, filling Delos with fuel, and other assorted odds and ends we find time to finish filtering, flavoring, and bottling our fresh batch of moonshine!

Our moonshine process onboard start to finish! Kazza requests vodka, and Taylor wants to learn so we whip up a batch from scratch. After a few weeks in Mexico we find ourselves pinned down, tied to a dock, and waiting for weather for our passage to Panama. We make the most of our time by preparing Delos for the passage, but also taking advantage of the pool, slackline, and most importantly- using our time to whip up a batch of moonshine from scratch.

In this episode we dive under the Yucatan Jungle, into a dream world filled with magic, fossils, and clouds of acid. Cenote diving in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula can best be described as blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. In this video we get an offer too cool to refuse- a scuba diving adventure exploring the famous El Pit and Dos Ojos cenote’s in the Yucatan. So we pack our bags, cameras, and head over the the mainland. Our buddy Juan picks us up for a mini road trip to Tulum powered by tacos and beer. After meeting up with our host family and getting settled in we dive, quite literally, into the magical underwater world of the cenote. We are blown away and become instantly addicted to this new, and sometimes treacherous world the lives concealed under the jungle. We see a lot of strange things underwater, but this has to be the strangest! We heard a rumor of bizarre objects about 1 mile offshore from Isla Mujeres. With some possible GPS coordinates in hand we decide to spend the morning searching. Imagine swimming along and finding a sunken car, then a bunch of kneeling headless statues, then a group of coral-covered people. What the heck is going on here? Well you’ll need to watch to find out :). After returning from our exploration mission we comment on how nothing has broke on Delos in a while. Well, we should have kept our mouths shut because we had a major system failure involving the generator, toilets, AC, and even the water maker. With temperatures over 100F we start troubleshooting right away to pinpoint the problem hopping for a common point of failure. A random encounter takes us on a road trip across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico! Coming back from drinking margaritas we find a local boat tied up next to our dock in Isla Mujeres. Her skipper was named Susan, and she randomly offered to take us on a road trip of her favorite sites. We find sometimes that just accepting random offers leads to an incredible experience, and this was no exception. Our first stop is Ek Balam, where we explore the amazing Mayan Civilization and learn about this once thriving culture. After a few more hours of driving we find ourselves swimming in the underground caverns known locally as Cenotes, and finish up the day with a private tour and incredible meal at a hacienda turned into an amazing resort. We make landfall in Mexico only to be immediately quarantined onboard. Kazza discovers a long forgotten alcohol stash in the bilge and we devise a plan to remedy the situation before customs arrives on Monday! We raise Taylor’s Canadian crew flag, and spend our time drinking Margaritas and Pina Coladas. It’s tough but someone has to do it… Before we know it Monday rolls around and we clear customs. I decide to rent a golf cart to go on a taco run where we actually run into a local dude named Juan, who’s actually been searching for us. It turns out Juan is not only a Nacho Libre impersonator and Delos Tribe member, but a pretty damn good tour guide also. He takes us on an amazing island adventure filled with turtles, tacos, beaches and of course cerveza!!!!

Days like this make me wonder… Will I pinch myself and wake up from a dream? Powering through the seas 150 NM offshore we experience one of those days we wish would never end. We decide the conditions are ideal for some mid-ocean spinnaker action. We drag the huge sail out of the bow locker, drop the genoa, and set ourselves up for some amazing downwind sailing. Just as we think the day can’t get any better we get visited by a playful pod of dolphins that spend hours frolicking in our bow wake. Baby Nugs goes nuts and does a happy dance to celebrate! As night sets in we drop the kite and set sail for building conditions, which turns out to be a good plan as overnight the wind builds to 20 knots. We find ourselves powering through the seas with an incredibly comfortable motion and Taylor decides to try her Night hand steering skills in the building swells. By morning we find ourselves about 20 NM from Mexico and getting absolutely hammered by the current, but Delos is built for these conditions and powers through to the other side of the Gulf Stream. A few minutes later we spot Mexico and enter the crystal clear waters of Isla Mujeres! Please check out Taylor’s Channel.

Things don’t start smoothly for our 300 nautical mile passage to Mexico. After waiting for a decent weather window we hoist sail and head straight out into the Gulf Stream. The seas are steep and confused and Baby Nugs loses her breakfast. Twice in fact 🙁 We decide to hoist both downwind sails to stabilize Delos and gain speed, and soon are making amazing progress in a perfect 15 knots of wind. Delos and crew are in the groove and we have an incredible day of pure downwind sailing. Day turns to night and Brian brakes down the night watch rules for new crew Taylor. The moon rises and we have a fantastic night of moonlit downwind sailing before the wind changes and we’re forced to drop sail and gybe to get back on course. To be continued in part 2!

It’s 5:30AM and squalls are ripping through the anchorage. A sailboat drags past us and ends up hard aground on the beach. Now it’s a race against time to get her off and afloat before the tide drops leaving them stranded in the Dry Tortugas Seaplane landing zone! The only problem is they have no windlass and their dinghy painter has jammed up the prop- leaving them without power and disabled.

After an incredible downwind sail we find ourselves back in the Dry Tortugas, waiting for a weather window to make the 300 mile sail to Mexico. The weather is incredibly calm and we find ourselves taking advantage by paddle boarding and scuba diving our hearts out. All is well until a front moves through and puts the entire anchorage on a lee shore. A few boats drag right past us without event but then in the middle of the night one actually ends up on the beach. It’s all hands on deck to get our gear and assist with our neighbors to literally winch them back into deeper water using our spare anchors and line.

We sail away from the disaster “bowling alley” anchorage of Key West! We’re full of provisions and conditions are PERFECT so we hoist the kite and show our new crew Taylor the ropes, quite literally. After 12 amazing hours of downwind sailing bliss we arrive back in the Dry Tortugas where we’ll wait for a weather window to make the 300 mile crossing to Mexico. We whip up some drinks, grab the slack line, and head into the beach for a well earned afternoon of sundowners and laughs with friends.

Welcome Taylor to the crew! SCREAMING and a loud CRASH from our neighbors boats smashing together interrupts our welcome breakfast. I run outside to see what’s going on to find 3 boats being smashed together by the wind and currents. A boat has broken loose, taking two more with it, and they’re dragging FAST. Deciding this is more pressing than the Hollandaise sauce I’m whipping up we take off in Maggie to play tugboat and help by pushing the boats apart and resetting their new hooks. It’s quite an exciting first morning having our new crew onboard, Taylor who just joined the day before. Then the next night it happens to Delos herself. After 4 days solidly set our anchor breaks free and we find ourselves dragging. It’s an all our race to pick up and reset the hook before we smash into our neighbors and the shallows reefs around us.
