Time is an interesting thing. I remember being a young boy watching the clock when 1 hour seemed like an eternity. When driving up the coast to Brisbane was a marathon and the summer school holidays seemed to go on forever. I now look back on the past year and it has happened in the blink of an eye.

My first solo night watch and the sky is a blaze like a scene from dooms day! Delos and I motor forward through man made volcano’s of the Brunei oil rigs.

I glance to my left and see a middle aged woman dressed in brightly colored Malaysian garb.

“10. Tubbataha Reef: This is the undisputed king spot for diving, comparable to Malaysia’s Sipadan, but enormous. It’s an atoll way off in the Sulu sea and everyone without fail that I know that has been there has had nothing but ridiculous things to say that border on impossible.

I’ll be the first to say that diving Tubbataha reef was the last thing I saw myself doing this June. Apart from being convinced that I didn’t have the time away from work, I’d never really been sailing and I hadn’t been diving in 5 years (due to the minor issue of being allergic to saltwater!).

“What the hell are we going to do?” I ask Josje as I sit down in the V Berth next to her. She looks at me with the same confused look she has given me the other 50 times I asked her that. “I don’t know, babe. We seriously have no money left.

One of the most amazing things about cruising is how plans can suddenly be washed away.  They are truly written in the sand at low tide.  Way back in January of this year we planned to sail to Palawan in the Western Philippines, then work our way north towards Mindoro and Puerto Galera.

“Brian- I think we should try to go!”  said Karin.  Go where?  This was my first thought.  Karin has this habit of bringing you right into the middle of her thoughts without any context so I was understandably confused. 

If Manila had a human avatar she’d be a sultry seductress. She would at first be a little scary, and a little overwhelming. Over time she’d make you feel comfortable drawing you in closer and closer.

Manila gets mixed reviews from most people. Fellow cruisers, travel guides, and even locals all have varying opinions. Undeniably there’s a certain pull though, to seeing the capitol city of the Philippines.

I feel like the Philippines always pulls something extraordinary out of its magical hat, and this was something I never thought I would see here.

It’s Wednesday night and we’re laying outside watching all of the little insects flying around and making their presence known to us. They may be small, but we definitely knew they were there. They can get annoying after a bit though, but our only saving grace is that there isn’t enough of them to cause an infestation. We are the type of people who keep our house clean, but we do like to have companies like https://www.pestcontrolexperts.com/pest-control/ on speed dial in case these few insects turn into a whole swarm of them. After hearing them buzzing around and fluttering their wings at us, the sound of them suddenly became very soothing. I’m half sleeping when Brian suddenly looks over at me with a big grin on his face, eyes filled with thrill and excitement. –”it’s my Birthday this weekend, lets sail to Manila!!”
