TROUBLE IN PARADISE 😳 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 393

This week’s episode pretty much sums up boat life: Highs and lows in beautiful places, broken stuff, and unforgettable magic moments all mixed in between! We run into some tricky problems with the generator, which we depend on quite a bit these days for things like making water and running the AC for Sierra’s afternoon naps when temps hit about 100 degrees inside the boat. After a bit of trouble shooting I was pretty sure I knew what the problem was, but with no access to the replacement parts I had to get a little creative with the solution…I think a lot of you that enjoy the maintenance/repairs/technical stuff will find this one super interesting!

We also do our first night dive in YEARS on the Fang Ming which you saw us dive in last week’s episode with the frisky turtle. Night dives have always been a favorite of ours, but doing it on a wreck is an incredibly rare treat. Ship wrecks already have such a feeling of mystery and eeriness even during the day time, so when you add in the element of darkness and tunnel vision, it’s a seriously amazing experience.

Sailing our house to the DESERT…We Didn’t Expect THIS 🀯 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 392

It feels like we just landed on MARS! After our 4 day passage from Puerto Vallarta, we finally make landfall in one of the most alien like environments we’ve ever encountered in 13 years of sailing around the world. It’s so wild that we can spend the last few months in lush jungles like Panama and Costa Rica, and now here we are arriving in our floating home into a full on desert. But what’s even more fascinating is that the vast and barren landscape above the surface is such a sharp contrast to what lies under the surface of the sea. We dive an incredible shipwreck called the Feng Ming, and have one of the strangest and most incredible encounters with a sea turtle that we still can’t really explain.Β  Join us in this week’s episode for a first taste of how WILD the Sea of Cortez truly is.

Terrifying Night At Sea 😱 300 MILLION VOLTS Striking All Around Us ⚑️ Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 391

It was like an EXPLOSION in the sky as we navigated our way through squalls closing in all around us. It feels pretty vulnerable to be out there in the middle of the ocean with a 70 foot giant metal pole reaching up towards the electric sky from the middle of your home 😱

It was our first night out since departing from Puerto Vallarta on our 4 day passage to the Sea of Cortez, and it was definitely one of the more nerve wracking one’s we’ve had in a LOOOONG time. But luckily the following days brought us some pretty magical experiences, and it felt so good to be out of the marina and headed up to a part of the world that we’ve heard so many incredible things about. And when we finally made landfall and laid eyes on the alien like landscape all around us, it made the long sleepless nights all worthwhile!

This NEVER Gets Easier 😒 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 390

The time has come again for another one of those hard episodes. This one is incredibly bittersweet for us…There is so much love, laughter, and good vibes in this episode as we welcome friends, family, and of course our lovely Patrons down to Puerto Vallarta to celebrate the completion of Brian’s first circumnavigation. But it’s also full of tears and heartbreak as we experience that familiar feeling that every sailor knows so well…the sadness that comes with goodbyes. It’s inevitable in this lifestyle, but that doesn’t make it any easier.

In addition to saying farewell to family at the end of their visit, it’s also time for Jordan to head off on her next adventure after 4 months and 2,000 miles. We had one helluva ride together, and if you didn’t know already Jordan has been working with us behind the scenes for the last couple years, so don’t worry you will definitely be seeing more of her in the future 😁 If you’d like to follow her adventures, check her out on instagram at @jordan_copp

ALL ALONE In A Secret Cove 🀯 Off the Grid, Off the Charts…THIS IS LIVING! S.V. Delos Ep. 389

Finding these MIND BLOWING hidden corners of the world is why we live this lifestyle!

Life at sea certainly has its ebb and flow where it can seem really really tough, or so unbelievably charmed and magical. I wouldn’t use the words “good and bad” to describe these, because the challenges and struggles that living on boat presents is also what makes it so rewarding…but that being said, pretty much since leaving Panama, the pacific coast of Central America and Southern Mexico had felt pretty tough. While we had some AMAZING moments along the way, when we compare the last three months up the coast to three months in San Blas, it had an entirely different feeling to it. In this episode, we finally get a taste again of the charm and magic, and danggggg did it feel good!!! Even if it would be incredibly short lived as another tropical depression was riding right on our tail. So join us for our little three day escape from storm dodging and share in our pure bliss and happiness on this beautiful Friday πŸ₯°

We’re SURROUNDED! Hurricanes On All Sides Of Us 😳 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 388

Was sailing through hurricane season a bad call???Β  This is our second brush with a named hurricane in the last month, will we get lucky again?

We’ve found ourselves in a bit of a tricky spot. We’ve been northbound for the last couple months since transiting the Panama Canal trying to make our way up towards the northern part of the Sea of Cortez to try and escape the hurricane season in this part of the world. But now we’re smack dab in the middle of one of the most active and earliest Pacific storm seasons…so now we pretty much have no choice but to keep moving, choose our weather windows carefully, cross our fingers and hope for the best.

What Can Go Wrong, WILL GO WRONG 😳 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 385

All Systems Are Down 😱 A slew of failures leaves us with no gps, no navigation, no autopilot, and no instruments…Delos goes dark!

Get ready for a doozie of an episode that pretty much sums up boat life…stuff breaking with moments of magic mixed in between! We left Chiapas with a less than exciting forecast. After weeks of nothing but headwinds on the tail of Hurricane Agatha, there was finally a light period that we would be able to motor into and make miles north towards the prime mexican cruising grounds on the other side of the Tehuantepecs. And as the days unfolded, it was one thing after the next as we dealt with a surprise visit at sea, one stir crazy toddler, current, wind and waves on the nose, and a whole slew of system failures that left us with no GPS, no autopilot, and no instruments.

PINNED DOWN by Hurricane Agatha 😱 Now What? Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 384

What happens when you mix an incoming hurricane, some rowdy sailors, a tattoo gun, and lots and lots of beers???

After arriving to Mexico after our 5 day passage, we were super stoked to dive right into everything this coast has to offer…but mother nature had other plans for us. What we hoped to have been a little 3 day stop over turned into 3 weeks as the strongest hurricane to ever hit the pacific coast of Mexico in the month of may rolled in to the north of us, and then blasted headwinds in the exact direction we wanted to go for the foreseeable forecast. But in true Delos fashion, we decided to drink a few beers and roll with it, leading to an airbnb pool party, some tattoos, lots and lots of beer, a trip to Guatemala, and of course boat projects galore.

When the MADNESS Sets In πŸ€ͺ How We Stay Sane AT SEA! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 383

Sailing can be an exhilarating, magical, sporty, terrifying, beautiful experience, and everything in between…but when there’s no wind or light and variable winds, things can get a bit tedious when you’re just bobbing around in the open ocean with very little to keep you entertained. So here’s a little glimpse into the reality of sailing in part 2 of our 5 day, 500 nautical mile sail from Costa Rica to Mexico.

Our Top SCARIEST Moment In 13 Years of Sailing Around the World 😱 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 382

I Don’t Want To Be Here Right Now πŸ₯Ί Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 381

Some days we wonder why we choose this lifestyle…

The life of a sailor is full of the highest highs and lowest lows, and luckily when things get tough there’s usually some dolphins waiting around the corner to brighten up your day! Join us in this week’s episode for one of the roughest anchorages we’ve been to in years, forcing us to high tail it out at first light through an unsettled sea state. After rolling our guts out, we arrive to a marina in Papagayo where we get some tattoos, do some laundry, and navigate the overly complicated and lengthy process of checking out of the country. Then we make a little pit stop on our way out at one of the most famous surf breaks in the world before setting sail for our 500 mile sail to Mexico!

Skinny dipping In Bioluminescent ALGAE 😱 (Strangest Experience Ever!) Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 380

Skinny dipping at night in the middle of a glowing sea of what looks like millions of tiny fire flies in Costa Rica was one of our strangest and most amazing experiences ever! We noticed the bioluminescence when we pulled in a line from the side of the sail boat, and after experimenting throwing different things in the water, we decided to jump in! We were surprised to see some of things that can trigger the bioluminescence. I won’t ruin the surprise for you on this one though, you’ll have to wait and see for yourself πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

But the same creatures that put on this stunning show are also responsible for another unbelievable phenomenon…We woke up in the middle of a hot, stinky, mass grave of THOUSANDS of dead fish all around us. What causes this? We found ourselves in the middle of a red tide event like we have never seen before. It’s pretty insane how such a tiny organism can create so much beauty and so much destruction.
