Happy Friday everyone! As your work week is winding down, we invite you to join us for what a week in our world looks like. Progress here in the shop isn’t a linear story from one project to the next, but rather more like a zig-zag connect the dots, with the line moving in the general correct direction (most of the time 😂) As usual we’ve got multiple projects on the go at the same time, but our main focus here is back on the bulkheads again. A couple videos ago you saw our first attempt at the port side head bulkheads (here’s the link if you missed that one: https://youtu.be/sKv04oW0xP4 ), but after a bit of brainstorming and head scratching, we came up with a new and improved plan that we wanted to try out. It would involve scrapping what we’d already done up until this point, cutting some holes in the boat to fit it inside, and a bit of unexpected smoke just to keep us on our toes. But I think the result is totally worth it and we are so in love with how it came out!

We’ve got a reeeeal beefy episode ready for ya today! The systems fit out is officially underway, and we’re kicking things off with the grey water system. But more than that, we’re laying the ground work to start transforming the hulls from the ground up. Progress on the boat is like dominos, and once certain tasks are finished everything starts just cascading in place after. We start fitting the floors, the bulkheads, and a few other fun little side quests too, and the boat is just transforming right before our eyes! It’s soooo freaking exciting to see it all come together like this. We’re learning so much as we go, and as I gain confidence in my welding and just getting more familiar with the decision making and problem solving processes that come with building our own boat, it keeps getting more and more fun! We tried a bit of a different style for this episode, a bit longer and slower, and really leaving in all the details of each project, and some of my longer musings and thought processes behind it all. Our engine is heeeeere 🥳 Say hello to our Nanni N.480! Opening up that crate and seeing a brand spanking new, totally clean and shiny bright blue engine is a moment I still grin about when it pops into my mind. Seeing an engine that clean is like the boat equivalent of the new car smell, a special moment in time that you can savor to the fullest knowing it will never look like that again. But the warm and fuzzies would quickly be put on pause as we realize that the hatch where we need to lower the engine down through is going to be one tiiiiiiight squeeze. So we fire up the fork lift, put our noggins together, and get to work! Having safe drinking water on the boat is a obviously a non negotiable, and the process of ensuring our tanks are fit for the job turned out to to be a BEAST! If you didn’t get enough tank action in the last two episodes, we’re back with the water tanks this time. Having dialed in our methods of sealing on the fuel tanks though, our focus here is a bit different. With the water tanks we need to make sure they are treated properly so that they will be safe to drink out of (we definitely don’t want to drink out of raw aluminum tanks!). It’s a loooot of prep work, and we end up brining in the pros on this one since having clean and safe water is not something we want to experiment with. The whole process is pretty cool, and it’s also an important step to tick off our list before we can move on to the next phase of the build where we can actually start putting in floors, bulkheads, and cool stuff like that!

We’re back with part 2 of our fuel tank saga! After more than a few failures in part one, we’ve gone back to the drawing board and we’ve got a bunch more materials and techniques to try out. I think these last two episodes really represent the problem solving process we’ve been going through (maybe on a slightly bigger scale than other projects up to this point, although I’m sure there will be even trickier ones to come). The reality is that when you build a custom boat, you’re doing lots of things for the very first time, and what we draw up in the plans or map out in theory isn’t always going to be spot on the first time. But this is exactly what we wanted when we decided to build the boat in this way, and it’s the challenges and struggles that leave you feeling the best once you tackle them! We also take you on a little dive into galvanic corrosion again and installing our anode pockets, which I think covers a lot of super interesting information that a lot of you have been asking about.

Of all the projects on the build so far, this unsuspecting, seemingly simple task has turned out to be wayyyy trickier than I predicted. We thought it would take a day or two to wrap this baby up, but instead it ended up stretching out over the course of weeks with so many trips back to the drawing board that I lost count. Problem solving is something we’re no stranger to on this build, and it’s part of the fun and the challenge…but at a certain point enough is enough 😂 So hop on the struggle bus with us and get a few laughs at our expense while we learn a bunch of amazing new ways that DON’T work!

We can’t believe this incredible milestone that we’ve reached 🥳 It feels a bit like the end of an era, and it’s time to move Delos 2.0 into her new home (allllll the way to the shed next door to the one we’ve been working in the last 8 months 😂) where we will dive into phase 2 of the build: the fit out and systems installations. Working with the metal has been such an invaluable learning experience, but I’m not gonna lie I’m pretty stoked to start getting into some new tasks that I can really get hands on with a bit more. Today we’re tackling a suuuper interesting, super in depth, and SUPER critical part of the build….We’re fabricating and installing the rudder! Like most projects up until this point, it has involved me using techniques and materials I’ve never used before, and had me cratching my head more than once. It turned out to be an absolute BEAST of a project, and it required quite a lot of improvising and creative problem solving, which is as fun as it is challenging. And in the end, we could not be any happier with how it turned out! For all my fellow geeks who like to get really deep into the nitty gritty of it all, you’re going to LOVE this one I think 🥳

This week’s episode is a little different as we step away from some of the welding and grinding and take a VERY deep dive into how we’ve been planning and designing the interior. We take you along through some of our biggest design choices, explain what materials we’re choosing and why, and we also explain why weight savings is such an important aspect of the build…I know we’ve mentioned it many times in the videos, but I don’t think we ever actually stopped to go into the nitty gritty of why. Normally when you see water rushing inside your boat and rapidly filling up the hull with water, it’s a sailor’s worst nightmare…but in this case, we actually did it on purpose! This week’s episode is pretttttty dang interesting if you ask me. Many of you have been asking about how we will test to make sure there aren’t leaks in any of the welds, and here is our answer: Just fill it up with water and see if any leaks out 😂 We were actually really looking forward to this, not only just to see how solid our boat is, but also for the novelty of hooking up the hoses and splashing around on the inside. You don’t have many opportunities to get excited about water rushing inside your boat, so we decided to take full advantage!

After nearly 3 months away, it’s time to lay eyes on Delos 2.0 for the first time, and the transformation is just unbelievable! If there was ever a time to appropriately use the word flabbergasted….this was it 😂 We left Delos 2.0 looking a bit like a skeleton of boat, and when we arrived back she is really and truly looking like sexy, curvaceous, beast of a boat she is destined to be! Our trip away was amazing, but the feeling we had when we got back was so overwhelming that we are exactly where we should be, doing exactly what we should be doing….it was super validating and had us feeling more stoked than ever to keep chugging away on this project.

After 3 grueling months in the boat yard, we’ve watched our dream boat start taking shape and come to life before our very eyes! But as our visa for Australia winds down, we figured it would be the perfect opportunity to make a trip to Sweden to get in some quality family time…but not without first making a pit stop in California to visit the legendary Brady & Blue! But in true Delos fashion, you can take the family out of the boat yard, but you can’t take the boat yard out of the family 😂 We take a little road trip to the factory that makes the beautiful and innovative hatches that will keep us cool on Delos 2.0.

We’ve got a DOOZIE of an episode for you today! Join us for our week long saga of installing the electrical backbone that will allow us to move an obscene amount of power from our batteries to our hybrid electric propulsion system. Traditional wires weren’t very practical or affordable (we’ll explain why in the episode!) so we had to get a little creative and explore some other alternatives, and what we came up with is pretty dang cool if you ask me! We’ve got 33 minutes of problem solving, nerdy graphics including us riding a unicorn, and cutting holes in the boat as we dive into this hardcore but oh so rewarding project!

After MONTHS of wheelin’ & welding, it’s time for our first major system install! And it’s one of the most critical pieces of the puzzle when it comes to performance, safety, and reliability: Our steering system! I have to say that I am beyond excited for what we’ve designed, and while the process was full of challenges, I really enjoyed shifting gears a bit. The day we’ve been waiting for is finally HERE! It’s been an incredibly cool and incredibly challenging process to get the boat to this stage, and after 14 weeks of grueling labor we’ve finally made it to one of the biggest milestones of the build: THE FLIP! We’ve been building Delos 2.0 upside down to let gravity help us out with all the welding, but now that all the bottom parts of the hull are finished we’re ready to flip her right side up, a task that is no small feat. We bring in a team of cranes and seasoned Aussie pro’s, and what ensues is one of the wildest things I’ve ever seen with my own two eyes. We felt both feelings of excitement and accomplishment, along with a TON of nerves as our dreams and savings dangled in the air from a 60 ton crane. So buckle up and get ready for one heck of a ride in this week’s episode!

The countdown to the flip is ON! In 72 hours all 5+ tons of our boat are going to go flying through the air, suspended in the sky by a 60 ton crane. We’ve got people flying in from all over the world (including one verryyyyy special guest that many of you can’t get enough of) for the festivities, but the question is….will we be ready???
