After more than a decade of sailing around the world, we thought we’d pretty much seen it all. But becoming parents and raising a tiny captain at sea has both tested us and rewarded us in ways that we didn’t know were possible. This is our daughter Sierra, she’s 3 and a half years old and has lived at sea on our floating home since she was just four months old. 17 days ago we set off on our biggest undertaking yet as a family, sailing 3,000 nautical miles across the mighty Pacific Ocean from Mexico to French Polynesia. So for today’s episode, grab your sippee cup and your favorite stuffed animal and join us for a glimpse into what it’s really like to cross an ocean with a toddler!

Join us for my 5th (and Kazza’s 4th) equator crossing on Delos as we induct our two lowly polliwogs Hannah and Sierra into our society of trusted shellbacks. In this video we explain the history and significance behind the time honored tradition of the line-crossing ceremony, and of course things get more than a little bit silly (think whipped cream, adult diapers, you know the typical essentials that every sailor has on board). After two weeks at sea with nothing around us but blue water, it was quite the treat to have something out of the ordinary to get really excited about. I think you will all agree that the Hannah’s costume (or maybe punishment is a better word to describe what she was wearing 😂) is truly a masterpiece that will go down in Delos history.

THERE IS NO LEAVING SQUALL CITY 😳 Welcome to part 6 of our Pacific Crossing, get ready for some wet n’ wild action as we approach the equator. We arrive to the doldrums, or the Interpropical Convergence Zone. This is where the northeast and southeast trades converge, and its known for being mostly calm and windless…on my last Pacific Crossing we had to motor for a couple days straight to get through this part of the ocean, but this time we are FLYIN! It worked out great for our speed and fuel consumption, but man did things get sporty! Definitely not what you typically expect from this zone. But on the plus side, we got LOTS of free showers, and we manage to make the most out of it and are able to laugh at ourselves as we navigate our rolly state of existence. Plus we enjoy working our way through the massive pile of Wahoo that’s got our fridges and freezers bursting at the seams 🤤

It’s WAHOO MADNESS on the high seas! We’re 10 days into our 3,000 nautical mile voyage across the Pacific Ocean, and King Neptune is about to bless us with our most exciting moment of the trip yet…After downing a lunch of freshly caught fish tacos from a skipjack we snagged that morning, the crew was getting lulled into a food coma/siesta mode with the rolling of the boat. But we sprang to life when we heard that unmistakeable sound…..FISH ON!!! We hook an absolute MONSTER that puts our fishing skills to the test. After prepping the fish and managing to fit the obscene amount of wahoo into our fridges and freezers, the only thing left to do is enjoy the fruits of our labor…a catch and cook fit for kings with some fat and juicy wahoo steaks!

Don’t watch this if you’re afraid of heights! We’re about a week into our 3,000 nautical mile journey across the world’s largest ocean, and the days, hours, and minutes are starting to blur together. We’ve fully entered into “passage mode” and embraced that sweet blend of relaxation, living in the present, and a little touch of insanity and silliness thrown in the mix for good measure. This leads us into some interesting and hilarious antics to fill the time, including a way sketchier than expected trip up the mast in rolly downwind conditions, the smelliest, gag-worthy squid snack, and lots more! Grab your favorite cold beverage, kick back, and join us on the open ocean for some epic days on the water with the Delos crew!

Have you ever wondered what a day on passage ACTUALLY looks like aboard Delos? We wanted to share it all with you, from the epic moments like an intimate morning with nothing around for thousands of miles except you and some dolphins…all the way through to the simple things like doing the dishes. We tried to include minimal music and more ambient sounds, with some longer drawn out moments to try and create a real picture of what it looks, feels, and sounds like to be onboard Delos in the middle of the open ocean. So grab your morning coffee or your favorite frosty beverage, kick back, and prepare to be transported to our floating home for Day 5 of our 3,000 nautical mile passage across the Pacific Ocean.

Ahoy Delos Tribe! We’re comin’ at ya today with our monthly newsletter from the INSANELY gorgeous atoll of Raroia. We’re typing this in true comfort because for the first time since leaving the Sea of Cortez in April Delos is STILL! After 19 days at sea and super rolly anchorages in the Marquesas, then our passage here to the Tuamotu Islands, it feels like heaven to have found a flat anchorage. There’s a nice 15-20 knot breeze so it’s been nice and fresh on board which has been quite the treat too. The water is super clear and we’ve been getting in some great scuba diving, snorkeling, and swimming. Sierra can’t get enough of the being in the water here! One other cool thing we did here was checking out the monument for Kon-Tiki. Kon-Tiki was a rudimentary hand-made balsa wood raft that Thor Heyerdahl and a team of Norwegian Explorers sailed across the Pacific Ocean in 1947. We actually talked about Kon-Tiki in our last newsletter, so if you missed that one here’s the quick run down on the story there: Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, Heyerdahl believed that people from South America could have reached Polynesia during pre-Columbian times. His goal in completing this voyage was to show that it would have been possible using only the materials and technologies available to those people at the time. After spending 101 days at sea, they made it to French Polynesia and ran aground right here on the reef in Raroia. We’ve both read the book documenting their expedition called “Kon-Tiki” which is amazing (and available in our Amazon Storefront)but we also watched the movie after checking out the monument. We HIGHLY recommend both!
I (Brian) am in the process of getting my long stay visa which means we can stay for a year in French Polynesia (Kazza and Sierra both have Swedish passports so for them it’s no problem to stay here). That’s great news for us because now we can really take our time and move really slowly through this incredible part of the world. If you wanna follow our adventures through the Tuamotus you can follow our location HERE.
Some INCREDIBLE News!
This is Aaron Carotta. We met him last year when we were stuck in the marina in Chiapas, Mexico for about 3 weeks while we were waiting for a bunch of bad weather to pass. Aaron was attempting to make the first ever circumnaviation of earth by rowing. He was almost 2 months in to his Pacific Ocean crossing when he activated his EPIRB on May 31st (An EpPIRB is an emergency beacon that’s activated in extreme distress when a rescue is needed that transmits your location). Extensive rescue efforts began but all communication and pings from the beacon were lost, and eventually the search was called off on June 12th. His beacon went off again on Thursday, and they were able to spot him in his liferaft and he was eventually picked up by an oil tanker on June 16th, more than 2 weeks after his first distress signal. The oil tanker is en route to Hawaii and is expected to reach its destination with Aaron aboard on June 25th. We’ve been following Aaron’s story and the search efforts closely, and we are so incredibly happy and relieved to hear that he has been found safe, sound, and in good health. Very little is known yet about what actually happened, but I’m sure Aaron’s got one hell of a story. So let’s all cheers a cold one for Aaron today and celebrate being alive! You can follow Aaron on Instagram at @adventureaaron if you’d like to keep following along on his story.
What We’re Jamming To…
One of our go-to playlists for the last 5 years or so is THIS puppy right here. We’ve definitely mentioned it in a few videos before too. Every track is solid gold, and it’s a timeless collection of tunes to vibe out and sip a sundowner in the cockpit to. Think Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Tina Turner, Steely Dan, and much much more. Do yourself a favor and add this one to your rotation 🙂
Blast From The Past…
All the scuba diving we’ve been doing lately here in the Tuamotu’s has got us thinking about one of our favorite diving missions of all time. During our 1,400 mile sail from Madagascar to South Africa we decide to make a little pit stop at one of the most epic and remote dive spots on the planet: Bassas Da India. Because it’s so far from civilization and protected from any commercial diving or fishing operations, it is truly one of the most untouched places in the world. Check out the episode HERE to get the full experience!
We’re back with part 2 of our 3,000 nautical mile trip across the Pacific Ocean. We bash our way through one of the roughest nights we’ve had in YEARS as we round the turbulent stretch of ocean surrounding Cabo San Lucas. Sleep is out of the question, and the simplest of tasks require monumental effort. But as we make more miles out into the open ocean away from the compression zone, things start to settle, and by day 4 the wind clocks all the way around and we’re able to set up the poles and get ready for some glorious downwind bliss. The worst of it was behind us (at least for now) and we could kick back and the let the breeze at our backs push us along for days and days and days. I think this episode really captures some of the realities of sailing…the ups and downs in moods and energies. How every aspect of daily life on passage is so drastically affected by the weather and conditions. We hope you enjoy this glimpse into what life is really like on passage for us.

Let’s GOOOOO!!!!! We are so stoked and proud to present part 1 of our Pacific crossing series.
Even after all the years and all the miles, crossing the Pacific is such a HUGE milestone. It had been years since we did a big ocean passage…Delos crossed the Atlantic without us while we were in Sweden welcoming Sierra into the world, but our last big sail was Africa to Brazil, which feels like a life time ago! We had forgotten what it felt like to spend weeks at sea, to lose sight of land, familiarity, and civilization…To lose track of time and daily obligations in such a monumental way, and become hyper focused on the present and living in such a beautiful and simple routine.
After months of preparation, we finally pull the hook and depart on our journey of nearly 3,000 nautical miles across the world’s largest ocean. Within just 4 miles of leaving we face our first curveball of the trip as our normally trusty engine starts playing tricks on us. But Delos is a sailboat, and that’s what we were gonna do! So we press onwards and meet some pretty epic conditions, catch a monster fish, mingle with some curious dolphins, and soak up our last sight of land for weeks.
We hope you enjoy coming along on this big adventure with us.

We’re about to wave goodbye to land & civilization for up to a MONTH…Are we really ready for this?! We’ve got a to-do list that just won’t quit, so it’s all hands on deck as we make the final push towards departure day. This is our last episode before we embark on our Pacific Crossing, and it’s a super fun one! We welcome our last but not least addition to the crew, Conor, who many of you might recognize from our COVID lockdown crew in the Bahamas, and he also joined us onboard Delos when we transited the Panama Canal. Both Conor and Hannah bring SO MUCH stoke and good vibes to the team, and we were all absolutely buzzing as we ticked off all our final tasks and got closer and closer to setting off into the deep blue.
Also for those of you that have been following along at the edge of your seats, we finally present our conclusion to the ongoing transmission saga, and we are happy to report that after installing the “new new” one, it’s been running without any issues which has been such a relief (although we did run into a slew of engine problems that were completely unrelated, more on that come 😂 )
We just celebrated the 13th birthday of our YouTube channel! To celebrate, we’re offering the Delos Tribe 13% off EVERYTHING in our online store…We got tees, tanks, flags, beanies, hoodies, rash guards, and more! Today’s video is part 1 of 2 as we document the process of preparing Delos and us for our Pacific Crossing. Stoke levels were ridiculous on board as the reality of the undertaking ahead of us began to sank in. We arrive to La Paz and immediately dive in to our never ending list of boat jobs like provisioning all the dry goods, trying to get to the bottom of our faulty transmission (this saga will continue into next week’s episode 😂), taking down our beloved dome, and going through and checking everything in our ditch kit to make sure we have everything we need in case of an emergency. And speaking of our ditch kit, we’ve always had a downloadable PDF on our website of everything we keep in our ditch kit, but we’ve gone one step further and we made an Amazon Storefront where you can see everything listed in one page and order straight from there. We’ve also got other categories of things like camera gear that we use, essential tools, our favorite cruising gear, galley gadgets, stuff for kiddos and more. You can check it out at amazon.com/shop/sailingsvdelos
It’s been so great to relive the excitement that we felt before the crossing. The only longer passage we’ve done since having Sierra was from Mexico to Panama, so we had so many emotions running through us as we prepared to spend 3 weeks at sea. We hope you enjoy sharing in the excitement with us as we get closer and closer to departure day!

Ahoy from French Polynesia! After 3,000 nautical miles and 19 days, 14 hours at sea, we made it from La Paz, Mexico to Fatu Hiva French Polynesia. It was such an incredible trip, and apart from a few rough days right at the beginning and at the very end, we had some pretty epic (and FAST!) conditions. My last crossing of the pacific took 24 days, so we shaved off quite a bit of time. We are beyond proud of the whole crew, but especially our tiny captain Sierra. Crossing the world’s largest ocean is a physical and emotional challenge for anyone no matter how old you are, so we are so impressed and glowing with pride at what a hearty little sailor she has grown into! Before we go on with our update, here are a few fun facts and stats from the trip:
Longest period without changing the sails – 2 1/2 days
Sail changes- 23 in total
Fuel used – 180 liters (47 gallons) which is about 64 NM/gallon!
Fish we kept – 3 (Jack, Bonito, and massive Wahoo)
Fish we threw back – 5 (Small Mahi, Sailfish, and more Bonito)
Apples we left with – 61
Apples we had left on arrival – 4
Fresh water we left with- 400 liters
Fresh water we arrived with- 900 liters
Things that broke on the boat – 5
(Radiator hose, fan in fridge, chafe on halyard, seized block, tack line on Genoa)
900GB of footage filmed = 33hours
Longest period of sleep – 5 1/2 hours
After the passage, the time here has absolutely FLOWN BY. We can’t believe we’ve already been here for two whole weeks. We made landfall in Fatu Hiva, spent a few days on Nuku Hiva, and now we’ve spent the last week or so at the beautiful island of Tahuata.Besides the post card perfect beaches and landscapes literally everywhere you look, one of the other things that has really jumped out as since we’ve been here is how AMAZING the fruit is.One of Kazza’s favourites has been the pamplemousse, which is basically like a bigger and sweeter grapefruit. The bananas are so insanely good…you can get them right off the tree and let them ripen naturally (instead of the various techniques like refrigeration and using ethylene gas in ripening rooms commonly used for most bananas you buy in the supermarket) and the flavor is truly something from another dimension. In other exciting news, I shaved my beard (Sierra was so confused 😆 ), we saved a turtle that was stuck in some line, we’ve been mastering our coconut opening skills, swimming lots, and just generally enjoying life in the slow lane.
Inspired Reading
It’s so incredible to be back in Polynesia, not only because of it’s stunning natural beauty, but also because of it’s rich seafaring culture which I find to be so incredibly fascinating. One of my favorite books of all time is “Kon-Tiki: Across the Pacific in a Raft” by Thor Heyerdahl. It documents the story of the 1947 Kon-Tiki Expedition where Norwegian explorers sailed across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands aboard a rudimentary hand-made balsa wood raft.Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, Heyerdahl believed that people from South America could have reached Polynesia during pre-Columbian times. His goal in completing this voyage was to show that it would have been possible using only the materials and technologies available to those people at the time. It’s an absolute page turner, and was one of my early inspirations for embarking on my own big adventure. You can find this book along with all our other favorites from the Delos library in our brand new Amazon Storefront.Besides our recommended reading you will also find categories for all our must have cruising essentials, tools, stuff for the galley, safety gear, and more that we couldn’t live without on Delos.Check out our storefront here!

🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US 🎉
13 years ago our YouTube channel was created. If you would have told me on that day that the click of the publish button would trigger a series of events leading me to the love of my life, starting a family, an endless list of unforgettable experiences and friendships on the shores of 46 different countries around the world, with millions of people following along on the journey with us…I would have told you that you’re out of your mind 🤣 But here we are in French Polynesia after completing Delos’ second crossing of the mighty Pacific Ocean, still exploring, still documenting and sharing it all, and still receiving love, support, and encouragement every day from our AMAZING Delos Tribe! None of this would have been possible without ALL OF YOU! So thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and here’s to 13 more years of love, laughter, and adventure! To celebrate, we are giving you all a special coupon code for 13% off of EVERYTHING in the shop! Click here to visit our online store, then enter “bday13” during checkout to receive your discount.
The Band is BACK TOGETHER! Just in case some of you are newer followers and haven’t watched our earlier videos, long before little Sierra was running around the boat, and even before I laid eyes on my beautiful Swedish princess Kazza for the first time, my brother Brady was a part of the Delos story. We had a run of about 10 years living, traveling, working, drinking, and running amok together on the high seas. From crashing weddings in India, diving with sharks in the most remote corners of the ocean, equator crossing ceremonies on multiple occasions, an unspeakable amount of all nighters, and literally thousands of other memories and moments together (too many of which are not appropriate to share 😂 ) we truly shared more than most brothers could ever dream of…Brady was even the officiant at me and Kazza’s wedding.
But eventually the time came for our lives to keep going on their own paths. And after more than 3 years, we were finally reuniting in Mexico, and this time Brady and Blue were on their own boat with Sharki the wonder dog in tow. We only got to spend a few days together because the weather really wasn’t cooperating with us, but man was it one of the most special moments ever. I’m so incredibly proud of everything we have both accomplished together and apart, and no matter how much time and distance separates us, he will always be my best friend. We hope you enjoy this little glimpse into this special time with family 🙂

After 280,000+ liters of fresh water produced, it was finally time to replace our trusty old water maker! We’ve been getting so many comments lately from you all about how much you enjoy the boat project videos, so we thought it would be cool to do a super in depth episode all about installing our new water maker, a full run down on how water makers actually work (which I think is super interesting!), and our honest review of it’s performance. Plus of course a healthy dose of our usual boat work antics where nothing goes according to plan 😂
We hopped back a little bit in time for this episode, but we wanted to also include our review of the system and it’s performance so we waited about a month after installing to finish filming everything for this video so we can give you the full picture. We ended up going with a pretty sweet 18-25 gallons per hour system by Sun Pure Water Makers. But we opted for the additional membrane which almost doubles our output for the same power input. It’s pretty wild because with our new set up we can actually run it off just the inverter and solar power (our old system needed the generator) so that is a game changer for us!
Visit sunpurewatermakers.com to learn more and give Arne a shout if you need help finding the right system for you.

Delos is a SPEED DEMON AGAIN! Our trip south continues with some gorgeous conditions, even if it was a bit chilly we were absolutely loving the winter in the Sea of Cortez compared to our trip up which was mostly motoring through a windless swimming pool and sweating A LOT 😂 . Now we had awesome wind and Delos was eating up the miles like a machine, it felt SO AMAZING!
Our introduction back into cruiser life after our long break honestly couldn’t have been better. We found some relaxing hot springs, did some hiking, a few repairs, and lots of wonderful moments together as a family. Sierra has changed so much in the 4 months since we were last cruising, and it’s such a joy to see how much more independent, curious, and in awe of the world she has become. Days like these make us truly grateful for our lifestyle, and are such an amazing reminder that all the hard work in the boat yard and tough days on the water are 100 percent worth it!
