The countdown to the flip is ON! In 72 hours all 5+ tons of our boat are going to go flying through the air, suspended in the sky by a 60 ton crane. We’ve got people flying in from all over the world (including one verryyyyy special guest that many of you can’t get enough of) for the festivities, but the question is….will we be ready??? We’ve got a to do list that just won’t quit, and a very hard deadline, so at this point there’s only one thing we can do: Put in our ear plugs, fire up an entire workshop full of the loudest tools on planet earth, and get to work! Wowzzaaaa, our minds are completely blown 🤯 Is anyone else just absolutely floored by how fast this build is coming along?!?! We’re 12 weeks in and it’s pretty unbelievable to see our dreams become a reality right before our eyes. Delos 2.0 is looking more like a boat than ever, but with our flip date fast approaching there’s no time to slow down. We tackle some sweet projects, and although there is lots of work still to be done on the hull and structure, we also need to start researching and thinking about some future projects too so we can start getting materials ordered. So we go on a couple field trips and start looking at some hardware, flooring materials, and even make a little trip to the city with the family!

This Part Could Make or Break Our Catamaran (Building Our Own Boat Pt 7)

This project is one of the HARDEST and also most CRITICAL parts of the build. Today we’re tackling the fabrication of our crossbeam and longeron, and if you’re scratching your head and asking what in the world is a longeron…don’t worry you’re definitely about to find out! It’s already a tricky enough process as it is, but we encounter a few more bugs in some of the components and we have to do a bit of improvisation. But as always Dan and the team don’t miss a beat, and we’re able to get creative and work through it all! The problem solving process of building and maintaining a boats is something I truly love…of course there are times I’m swearing and questioning our life decisions, but the feeling when you crack the code and see it all come together is really like nothing else!

The devil is in the details, and in this week’s episode we’re going to zoom in a bit on some super interesting projects and reveal some of the really cool tricks of the trade that have allowed us to tackle some of the unique challenges we’ve been faced with. It’s been soooo satisfying seeing some of these big side plates get fitted and watching the hull take shape right before our eyes, but now we’re getting excited to really dive in to a few other topics like our keel design, how we weld the super skinny part where the plates come together at the bow, and how in the heck we’re going to be able to hoist our 5+ ton boat in the air with a crane….Plus we also take you deep into another area of education we’ve been cracking the books on….the intricate (and often inappropriate) realm of Aussie Slang!

Blood, Sweat, and Side Plates: The Reality of Building an Aluminum a Catamaran (Part 5)

We’ve been busting our buns and making incredible progress on the build of Delos 2.0, but it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. Our first major deadline is approaching, and we’re starting to feel the pressure. So we kick things up a few gears, coming in early, staying late, and even braving the shop on weekends. It was sooo incredible to see Delos 2.0 start to really take her shape, and it was super motivating to keep pushing ourselves every single day. My back however was not as impressed as we were, and unfortunately it was time to pay the tax on all the huge gains we had been making…So I traded my steel toed boots for fuzzy socks, and swapped my jeans for sweat pants and hunkered in for several days of recovery on the couch. But the couch couldn’t keep us down, and we managed to take advantage of some time at home to focus on the interior. And of course the team was still hard at work throughout, and when we return, we have some suuuper cool projects to get down and dirty with!

What wizardry allows us to construct a curvaceous, mad max-esque aluminum catamaran using perfectly flat plates? Join us for a deep dive into the dark art of bending aluminum, one of the coolest and trickiest parts of the build. We bust out the English Wheel, a highly specialized machine that I’ll be getting to know EXTREMELY well, since we have 28 plates to form and it takes about an hour and a half to do each one. We’ve got our work cut out for us in this one, so lets dive in!

Why ALUMINUM Catamaran Vs. FIBERGLASS (DESTRUCTIVE Testing)

We’re building our DREAM BOAT….but why ALUMINUM? In this video, we explore why we chose this building material for our custom expeditionary catamaran, Delos 2.0. We delve into the key benefits of aluminum, such as its unmatched strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. But it’s not all smooth sailing— we also discuss the challenges and potential drawbacks of aluminum, plus solutions to combat these issues. We show you the reality of working with this material as we take you along a few pretty major projects like installing the engine bays, building and mounting the rudder tubes, and filling out the final frames all the way to the transom! And of course no discussion of aluminum would be complete without touching on how it stacks up compared to fiberglass. To put both materials to the test, we conduct a destruction test which was very ummmm *cough* educational….(and we might have had some fun running stuff over with a forklift and smashing away with a hammer). Whether you’re curious about boat building, considering materials for your own project, or just love a good showdown, this video has something for you!

This is our LAST episode in French Polynesia for a while, and it’s a pretty fun/sentimental/crazy one if I do say so myself. After 15 years on a monohull, we’re finally making the switch to a catamaran….but funnily enough we’ve actually spent an incredibly small amount of time on catamarans. We’ve done little sails here and there, we’ve certainly partied on them a time or two (*coughs* ahemmm, PARLAY 🙈) but we’ve never properly lived on one and gotten a feel for what day to day life is really like. So we figured it was time to change that, and what better chance to do it then to hang out with our friends Warren & Erica on their boat Va…and what better place than Bora Bora!!! So join us for the experiment as we dip our toes into life on two hulls, it’s gonna be a goodie!

Can’t believe this moment has finally arrived 🥹 It’s such a bittersweet feeling for us…Sooo much excitement for Delos 2.0 and all these big changes in our lives…but also feeling like such a special chapter of our lives is winding down, and that things will never be the same again. But before we can really process any of this, we’ve got a to-do list that won’t quit, and it’s a whirlwind of cleaning, organizing, and of course the haul out. Pulling Delos out of the water is always a bit nerve wracking even in the best of circumstances, but this was by far our sketchiest haul out ever! But when the dust settles, and it’s finally time to lock up Delos and wave goodbye, it’s quite an emotional moment for all of us…especially sweet little Sierra 😢

This is it! As our departure to build Delos 2.0 in Australia creeps closer and closer, it’s finally time to make our last sail to Raiatea where we will be hauling Delos out of the water and storing her on the hard. It’s a pretty crazy feeling, and there is soooo much to do to prepare the boat and ourselves. But luckily we’ve got the best crew in the business, and with the help of our tiny captain in training we’re able to tick a bunch of boat work off our list. But when the time finally comes to make this last passage, it’s far from the magical, unforgettable sail we were hoping for, and the reality is something else ENTIRELY different 🫣

ROUGH SEAS (4 Meter Waves 😳)….Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 466

Buckle up, we’ve got a spicy one for ya today! It’s finally time to depart our beloved Tuamotu Islands. Our haul out date was scheduled, our provisions were getting dismal, and we had soooo much to do to prepare Delos for being on the hard for 9 whole months. So we set off and pointed our bow west, and little did we know what was in store for us…the forecast for the wind looked fantastic, but there would be quite a bit of swell. Nothing that was worrying though, and certainly nothing compared to some of the extreme conditions we’ve encountered over the years. But it’s been a while since we’ve been out in seas like that, and we were in for a bit of a rude awakening. We got absolutely rocked out there. But even if it was pretty uncomfortable, we were FLYING along and we even caught a GIGANTIC mahi! So we’re going to call this one a win for sure! It’s good to get a little flogging out there every now and then to remind us we are true sailors 😂

Our lives are about to change completely, and it’s just starting to sink in…We’ve spent the last two months in some of the most remote and beautiful atolls on planet Earth, and now we are just days away from saying goodbye to all of it…we will be trading uninhabited islands, perfect white sand beaches, clear water, solitude, and pristine nature for a totally different life in Australia building our future dream boat. It’s beyond exciting, but at the same time we’ve been overcome with a bittersweet feeling…Balancing the gratitude for our time here which has been one of the most special chapters in our entire trip around the world, yet at the same time feeling into the corners of our hearts that will soon be left with little atoll shaped holes. But before we set sail and prepare to haul Delos out, we’re going to soak up every last drop of this unbelievable paradise.

The only constant in a sailor’s life is change…We had spent weeks at one of the most beautiful, wild, and remote atolls we’ve ever had the pleasure of dropping our anchor. And as is always the case with our nomadic lifestyle, the time eventually comes to move on. Every once in a while a place can really capture our hearts, and when that happens its tough to say goodbye. But luckily, with the breathtaking atoll of Fakarava on the horizon, it didn’t take long for us to get excited about our next destination. We enjoyed some of the most beautiful sailing conditions we’ve had in ages, and just like that our family and home was all set up in our next paradise, which just so happens to be one of the most famous and sought after dive destinations on planet Earth.

French Polynesia South Pacific Round II

It’s day 62, and there’s still no sign of civilization. 2 months had flown by for us out here in the Tuamotu Islands of French Polynesia, and we haven’t seen a single grocery store, a restaurant, or even a road…We love going off grid for SUCH a long time, and the deeper into we get, the happier we find ourselves. One of the coolest things about this lifestyle out here is that we are so rich in the currency of time. In our past lives, we traded our time to sit in the office and earn money to buy the things that we wanted, like a seafood dinner at a beachfront restaurant for example. Out here in the middle of nowhere, we don’t have access to conveniences like that, but we do have the time to hunt our own crabs, set up a fire on the beach, weave our own serving plates, and spend all day preparing an incredible feast with our friends and family in one of the most beautiful beaches on earth. These are the days we will look back on and think, dang, we really cracked the code on this whole livin’ thing. And the next day, we got to wake up and do it all over again.

French Polynesia South Pacific Round II

It’s kinda crazy when you think about how many decisions, experiences, and twists in the road lead us to our current realities. I can’t really explain exactly how we ended up here….but all I can say is that I’m pretty dang happy and grateful that we did. It’s my birthday, and we’re here in the incomparable Tahanea Atoll of the Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia. If I could go back in time and show this video to a younger version of myself and explain that this is my future…I’m not sure if I would have believed what I was seeing! They say you shouldn’t speak your birthday wishes out loud, but I can tell you that it looks a lot like this…
