Eco-Antifouling Results Q&A – Failure or Success????

Eco-friendly antifouling Q&A with Capt. Brian and Senor Brady. We sit down and discuss the results of our eco-friendly antifouling experiment. Brian starts off with a little recap of what we did during our haul out in Grenada, and why we made the decision to try and find a paint that did not rely on traditional antifouling agents. We show the results of Delos sitting at 3 weeks, 5 weeks, and 7 weeks without moving, and compare those results to boats around us with hard copper, ablative copper, homemade copper-epoxy, and copper coat. Finally we scrub the bottom clean and start sailing regularly again and show how the effects of water over the hull make a difference in the growth on Delos’s hull. This was a really interesting video to research and put together, we hope you learned as much as we did!

We Found the DELOS compound! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep.218

After our introduction to kiteboarding in Union Island we set sail North towards Bequia. Along the sail we encounter some strong head winds but make the best of it by enjoying the ride up at the bow. Not knowing what to expect in Bequia we find ourselves diving an incredible cave and getting to explore the famous MoonHole Compound! We’ve been lookin for a Delos Home Base… Could this be it??!

Our Addiction to Kiteboarding Begins!! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 217

Kiteboarding is something we’ve always wanted to learn. In fact we had a kite on Delos when crossing the South Pacific and nearly killed ourselves trying to learn on our own. But now with an excellent teacher and some new kit we’re ready to give it another shot!

Pokemon leads us through the entire setup of a kite and harness- covering the quick release safety gear and the basics of flying. Before we know it we’re body dragging all over the place and ready for our first board lesson. Face plants ensue, and some salt water is pushed down our throats but we succeed and have a few somewhat controlled rides by the end of our lessons.

Then Pokemon and his mates show us what it’s all about by giving us a demonstration of what 11 years of every day practice will do to your skills. We ended up learning so much about kiting, got our basic skills down, and left with a passion to learn more about this sport.

We Buried a Moonshine ?☠ Treasure on a deserted island!!! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 216

One of the things we love about cruising is having TIME! Time to relax, explore, and spend on ridiculous ideas. Anchored inside the amazing Tobago Cays marine park we decide to lift the hook and head outside the reef, to the island of Petit Tobac, where it just so happens that one of the best Pirates of the Caribbean movies was filmed. A simple idea becomes a full on mission and we find ourselves digging a hole to bury a pirates booty of Delos moonshine and some other treasures we pull out of the bilge. A few social media clue posts later and he have ourselves a full on treasure hunt on our hands!

After burying our moonshine treasure we return back to Delos so that Brian can begin Phase II of our eco-friendly antifouling paint, which is the installation of our Ultrasonic Antifouling system from Sonihull. We do a quick explanation of how the system works and go over the very basic installation steps.

At the same time Brady and Blue are off on a mission to drink beer underwater. Yep, they strap weights to their ankles and attempt to walk on the bottom while drinking beer. It’s a little behind the scenes glimpse into how we film a buy-us-a-beer segment.

Where’s my Friday Video?!?!? By Capt. Brian

Dear Delos Tribe! It’s a sunny, beautiful morning here on Delos. We’re currently in the incredible city of San Juan, Puerto Rico soaking up the atmosphere and getting Delos ready for our next sail to the Bahamas.

We plan to leave tomorrow but we’re not sure if it’s possible because our jib furler started making a terrible grinding noise on the sail here. I tore it apart and found that the top seal has gone bad, letting water into the gearbox and electric motor. The motor rusted to bits and the grease turned into a white chalky like substance. The bearings were wobbly and nearly seized. But I do think it’s salvageable. We spent the last week cleaning, stripping, chasing down parts, and rebuilding the electric motor. I had to order metric seals from the mainland US and now the gearbox is smooth as butter and looking pretty thanks to Mr. Brady’s paint job. The entire crew has been pitching in and lending their hand to the effort. Progress is being made on the to-do boat work list and hopefully if all goes well we will be back in business and ready to sail by tomorrow, but you never really know until you cast off the dock lines and head out.

But that’s not really the reason why I wanted to sit down this morning and write this. It has more to do with what may be on your mind- “Where’s my Friday Delos video?” Well, I that’s a great question and I’ll do my best to explain. Sharing this lifestyle is something we’re very passionate about. You’ve made it possible for us to continue this project, and sharing the experience of sailing around the world. You’ve given us so much support and love in return for making the videos, so much in fact it’s left us feeling very humbled and so grateful for the entire experience. You welcomed us into your hearts and homes and made us a part of your weekend ritual, for which we feel very blessed.

We started making the videos a few years ago, and what a wild ride it’s been! We began by literally googling “How to edit a video?” and learned as we went. We had to read up a lot about video content creation, how we can showcase it to our viewers, licensing, and all the nitty-gritty of it. We sort of had an idea about stock videos and photos; those clips that we most often see published on different digital media, but we weren’t sure of how to do an independent thing. Still, we persevered through it and learned. We bought new cameras, and drones, and upgraded our editing game. The best part is that now we can make a pro-level video by adding beautiful transitions, subtitles, and background music (which can be chosen from Shockwave-Sound.com).

And honestly, we are happy about it because all of it was made possible by your support. We found a niche in a genre of video that barely existed before and are really proud to be one of the first out there to create and share this type of content. And now we’re approaching 100,000,000 views which is truly astounding!!!! Can you believe that? ONE-HUNDRED-MILLION!!! Truly remarkable for a bunch of sailors with a video editing problem.

But as with most things in life there are two sides to everything, and the other side of this coin is the effort and time required to make the type of videos we want. We’re really not interested in playing the “YouTube Game”. If you’re not sure what this is let me fill you in a little bit. Pump out a lot of videos, get as many people to click using whatever means necessary (catchy titles, risqué thumbnails, etc.). It is talking about popular and trendy games such as insight rune word, and then they try to turn those viewers into subscribers and ask them to like and comment on your videos. Keep your videos short, optimize for mobile. The more views you get, the more ads YouTube can show, and therefore the more money they can make, which means your video is more likely to get promoted as a coveted YouTube recommended video, which brings you more viewers (hopefully) and the cycle starts over all again. Of course there are MANY, MANY more factors including engagement and view duration so this is the overly simplified description. In general the more videos you release, the more views you get, and the more your channel grows. I think it’s safe to say the longer format videos we like to make are not optimized for the YouTube algorithm.

Each and every Friday for the past few years we’ve done our best to release a video like clockwork. It became our ritual, and from some of the comments and messages we receive it has become a part of your ritual as well. Just the thought that you’ve watched our videos during a break at work, or on a cozy Saturday morning at home really inspires us to continue doing what we’re doing.

But there is a cost for everything, and the cost in this case is the time required to make the type of videos we want. We want to make quality content with good stories, and continue to evolve our filming and editing skills. We want to make videos that you are proud to sit down and watch as a family or share with a friend. We don’t want to make a standard “YouTube Game” video. Now, I realize that not everyone might have the same inclinations toward filmmaking that we do. Some people are in it more for the travel than the documentation. But you’d still want to get your content out there somehow and share your experiences with the world. In that case, you could take the help of a Video production company NYC to process and edit your raw footage into something that’s pleasant to watch. They could also help you advertise your content and maintain a social media presence whenever you are unable to, either due to connectivity problems, or some other reason.

Lately we’ve felt that that we need to make a tough decision. Sailing and living on a sailboat is an incredible lifestyle, but it is also an incredible amount of work all on its own. If you’ve ever owned a boat and prepared it to set sail you know exactly what I mean. If you haven’t then take it from someone that knows first hand a boat can and will take all the energy you put into her. Add to this the filming and editing component and you find your days filled. Please don’t misunderstand this as a complaint, because it’s something that we feel very passionate about continuing to do. It’s just a pure realization I think we’ve all been feeling over the past months. At what point do you draw the line? I think it’s when you have the realization that you should be out exploring and living life to the fullest, but instead you find yourself in front of the computer, which to me sort of defeats the purpose you had in the first place. We’ve found it’s no longer possible for us to keep up with the pace of editing videos and do this lifestyle justice. So we need to make a conscience decision. It’s the age-old argument of quality vs. quantity. The idea of finding balance in life. So for now we’ve decided to stay focused on what we love. Even if it means releasing less videos.

I want to be very clear on this point- We have no intention of stopping the videos! Our intention is to continue to grow and evolve our style, and at the same time try to give you the truest glimpse into what sailing around the world is all about from our point of view. There is so much love and excitement on Delos right now. Karin and I are flying back to Sweden in just a few weeks to have a daughter, which is the beginning of a whole new adventure!! Brady and Alex are going to put some miles under Delos’s keel and sail her to Europe, where we’ll all meet up when the timing feels right, slap a “Baby on Board” sticker on the stern, and do our best to show you what it’s like to have a little sailor onboard.

There may be some months where we release a video every week, there may be others where we skip a week, there may be periods where we don’t release a video at all. We feel this is the right decision even if it impacts our “social media statistics”. We choose lifestyle over the bottom line. We’re okay with that! I hope you continue watching, and if you choose, also to continue supporting. Either way everyone reading this message has a special place in our hearts.

I would love to see your comments and questions so please post below. Don’t be shy!

Peace, Love, and sending lot’s of warm and sunny vibes from Delos to you!

Capt. Brian, Kazza, Senor Brady, and Alex Blue.

Today we set foot on the infamous ? island!!! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 215

Sometimes even the most straight forward of tasks leads to an adventure. We plan to check out of Carriacou only to find that the customs office closed for good just the day before. Me meet up with Greg-OR-ry and he takes us on chill ride to the main town where the officials are hangin out. They take a short break from watching YouTube videos to stamp our papers and we’re off!

We arrive at Union island, get cleared with customs and immigration, and proceed to the infamous Happy Island which it turns out is built entirely of conch shells. The owner Ravi spent the last 15 years building this island on a sand bar out of the discarded shells from the local fisherman. It’s survived countless hurricanes and now he serves a pretty mean rum punch!

Slightly hungover we find ourselves sailing towards a very special group of protected islands known as the Tobago Cays Marine park. On my first snorkel to shore I see a ray, a few turtles, and even squid. Needless to say the protection is paying off big time in this area and we’re so happy to be able to share it with you.

Cooling Pump FAILURE! STOP Motoring You P***y’s!!!!- Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 214

If you like tweaking sails, sailing drone shots, and MacGyver like mechanical repairs while bashing upwind this video is made for you!!! With our shakedown cruise complete it’s time for Delos and her crew to leave Grenada behind and begin our exploration of the Grenadines. The guys from Precision Sails in Canada join us for a day sail and we set off towards Carriacou. Delos gets her new mizzen hoisted and we spend a few hours tweaking the leach, halyard, and foot tensions until we get it just right and she is flying along, bashing to windward at good speed.

Nearly to our destination the conditions become unfavorable for sailing and we crank up the “iron genny” to make our anchorage before sunset. After a few minutes of motoring steam starts spewing form the engine room and we’re forced to shut down the engine. A quick inspection reveals the engine has overheated due to a faulty raw water impeller. Brian springs into action using spare parts aboard to overhaul the pump as Delos bashes her way upwind, tacking towards Carriaou. We arrive just in the knick of time and find a very sweet anchorage in Carriacou.

WE SUNK A BOAT!! Sailing vessel Delos Ep. 213

Follow behind the scenes on Instaslam @svdelos

EVER WONDERED HOW TO SINK A BOAT?! And then go scuba diving on it?! It’s not very often you get to witness a boat sinking beneath the waves. While in Grenada we were lucky enough to, not only see it, but be part of it! We were onboard up to the last few minutes before the Tyrrel Bay went down. She was cleaned and scuttled specifically to become a dive site and artificial reef. (more…)

Pulling a Drunk Sailor off a REEF! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 212

GRAB SOME SWAG! www.svdelos.com/shop

It’s time for us to say goodbye to our beloved Tobago! But not without one more magical dive through the infamous London Bridge. After a peaceful night sail back to Grenada, we find a DRUNKEN SAILOR stuck on on the reef- full sails out and motoring even further in! After repeatedly turning down our offers of help, the cruiser community comes together and takes matters in their own hands! Thanks for watching and as always, be sure to like if you like, subscribe if you haven’t, and share with your sailing buddies. MUCH LOVE! ~Blue, Brady, Brian & Kazza!!! (more…)

Use for your phone or VR headset to enjoy properly 🙂

See what it’s like to be on a ship as she goes down! We were lucky enough to be part of a project in Grenada to help build an artificial reef. The ship was stripped of all toxic and hazardous material, towed into the bay and SUNK! Feels pretty eerie to be aboard while this is going on!

PODCAST TIME with Senor Brady and Alex Blue!

It had been a long time since meeting Andy and Mia from 59north.com . But as it always turns out, the sailing world is small. So, when we were in Antigua, Andy and Mia came and anchored right next to us. On a random night they came over and brought the fancy pants recording equipment to do a podcast with Brady and Alex! The last time we saw each other was bundled up in the arctic. Tune in for History, sailing, what’s next and some sailor knowledge! ENJOY!

THUNDERBALLS! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 211

Move over Bond, Breeeyawn is here! We heard some mixed rumors that Ian Fleming wrote a bunch of the James Bond novels while holed up in what is now an abandoned house on the rocky shores of Goat Island in Tobago. Determined to find the truth about this mysterious house, we go on a multi day exploratory filming mission where our strength and wits are tested by bats, laser spear guns, rogue eyeliner chunks, and room temperature vodka. Will we uncover the truth??? Watch to find out! Grab your shaken martini, get comfortable, and get ready to find out how we make our own entertainment on a tiny Caribbean island!! (more…)

You Gotta EAT EM to BEAT EM! Sailing Vessel Delos- Ep. 210

Lionfish are the scourge of the Caribbean! They lay millions of eggs, feast on other juvenile fish species, and have no natural predators in the Caribbean. We’ve hunted lionfish for a long time and thought it would be cool to share what we’ve learned about this problem with y’all.

We begin this episode by explaining how we choose dive sites by looking at our nautical charts, knowing that large drop-offs and changes in depth coupled with current usually make for excellent diving. Our chosen area is too far to take Maggie, so we weigh anchor on Delos and sail out to Little Tobago.

The scuba diving is out of this world! The only problem is the reef is ripe with nasty ole’ lionfish. We decide to do our part by hunting as many as we can and sharing a few facts about them. Nate cuts open their bellies to show how they feast on other juvenile fish species, and how to cut the spines off to avoid being stung. By the way, they are easy to clean and absolutely DELICIOUS. If you want to check out some recipes this is an excellent book- https://www.reef.org/products/lionfish-cookbook-2nd-edition

Screw the weather… Bloody Bay it is! – Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 209

Amidst a flooding river of outgoing logs and full on trees we decide to anchor Delos in Bloody Bay- Tobago, or rather because of the torrential weather better known as Muddy bay! After winding Delos through the debris field we find a decent anchorage and it’s time to begin exploring the scene in this less traveled part of the world.

We soon find out about the Blue Food Festival, which is dedicated to making everything imaginable out of the local Dasheen fruit which turns blue when you cook it. We are somewhat impressed… But not really so we decide to set sail to the East coast of Tobago to begin our diving expedition. On the way we are hailed by a dive boat, we think we’re busted and they’re gonna kick us out of the area but it turns out to be chartered by a fantastic group of Canadian divers that buy us a bunch of beers and take us out on their sweet dive boat for a spectacular night dive. YESSS! Delos Tribe comes through for the win 🙂

Interview With a Cruiser – Bamba Maru – Sailing for a Smile

Bamba Maru is more than just a 50 year old catamaran, it is home to Andy and Johanna, and a way for them to help others with a project called Sailing for a Smile. They set out 5 years ago with plans to sail the world and found purpose along the way by using their boat as a base to help those in need after devastating hurricanes hit Caribbean islands.

We are also pledging to 100% match contributions to their project for the first $1,000. So we’ll turn your $1.00 into $2.00!! Just head to https://svdelos.com/beer and in the message to the crew box just mention “Sailing for a Smile”. We will coordinate with the local schools and make sure 100% of the donations get there with no overhead and no fees 🙂 .

You can find more about their project at https://www.facebook.com/SailingForASmile/

The Art of Going with the Flow – Sailing Vessel Delos Ep.208

Life on a sailboat doesn’t always go as planned, and that’s the best part about it! Join us on the rainy but amazing island of Tobago for a soaking wet adventure as we learn about the global crisis of Man Shortage (I’m not even going to attempt to explain that here), then go on a rocking, rolling, murky scuba mission with our new underwater comms system. With dolphins, Belgian waffles, and soggy wetsuits in between, this episode has a little something for everyone!

This is our story, a story of four souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing and travel and adventure. But it’s also a story about meeting amazing people and making life long friends. It’s a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. Our experience has affected us so profoundly we want to share it, hoping that others may find inspiration to follow their dreams and do what they love.

SLOW TV – Passage to Tobago – Sailing Vessel Delos

SCENE CHANGE TIMESTAMPS BELOW…. Okay guys, for this one we tried to give a little more behind the scenes representation. As you just watched the edited Passage to Tobago video, here is the more “raw version”. Really hope you enjoy and as always looking forward to your comments. Brian

For this one we left the GoPro running while we get Delos ready for passage, motor out of the anchorage, set sail, and spend a few hours on passage. I moved the camera to a new fixed position from time to time. The audio was recorded on our Zoom mic in the cockpit, and later in the dinghy when we were filming from the bow. So kick back, throw this up in the background, and get ready to come on passage and chill with us for a bit on the ocean.

00:00 – 16:00 The crew get Delos ready to head to sea.
16:00 – 24:38 Getting the hook up and motoring outside the reef.
24:38 – 34:27 Setting sail with main, mizzen and Genoa.
34:28 – 54:30 Beating upwind.
54:31 – 1:03:47 Switch to cockpit view.
1:03:47 – 1:15:11 Switch to helmsman cockpit view.
1:15:12 – 02:49:00 Time to roll that fattie or hit that space pen and enjoy the ride 🙂

Delos is BACK! Sailing to Tobago! Ep.207

After 5 months in Grenada, Delos was chomping at the bit to get back out there! We pull up the anchor and beat our way down towards the rugged and amazingly beautiful island of Tobago. Then it was time for that moment when we shut the engine off and the only sound you can hear is the wind and the waves lapping on the side of the boat….it’s an indescribable feeling of peace and freedom, and it had been way too long since we experienced it on Delos. Once we get settled into our anchorage, we go for a shakedown dive to test out all our gear, and most importantly, break in our brand new underwater communication system! It takes a bit of adjustment, but eventually you couldn’t shut us up down there!
