We’ve been busting our buns and making incredible progress on the build of Delos 2.0, but it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. Our first major deadline is approaching, and we’re starting to feel the pressure. So we kick things up a few gears, coming in early, staying late, and even braving the shop on weekends. It was sooo incredible to see Delos 2.0 start to really take her shape, and it was super motivating to keep pushing ourselves every single day. My back however was not as impressed as we were, and unfortunately it was time to pay the tax on all the huge gains we had been making…So I traded my steel toed boots for fuzzy socks, and swapped my jeans for sweat pants and hunkered in for several days of recovery on the couch. But the couch couldn’t keep us down, and we managed to take advantage of some time at home to focus on the interior. And of course the team was still hard at work throughout, and when we return, we have some suuuper cool projects to get down and dirty with!

Building an aluminum catamaran from scratch has been one heck of a learning curve for a newbie like me, and every day I’m learning and challenging myself more and more…And now as we start to fit the hull plates and turn this skeleton of metal frames into an actual boat, I’m realizing just how difficult this is. What wizardry allows us to construct a curvaceous, mad max-esque aluminum catamaran using perfectly flat plates? Join us for a deep dive into the dark art of bending aluminum, one of the coolest and trickiest parts of the build. We bust out the English Wheel, a highly specialized machine that I’ll be getting to know EXTREMELY well, since we have 28 plates to form and it takes about an hour and a half to do each one. We’ve got our work cut out for us in this one, so lets dive in!

We’re building our DREAM BOAT….but why ALUMINUM? In this video, we explore why we chose this building material for our custom expeditionary catamaran, Delos 2.0. We delve into the key benefits of aluminum, such as its unmatched strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. But it’s not all smooth sailing— we also discuss the challenges and potential drawbacks of aluminum, plus solutions to combat these issues. We show you the reality of working with this material as we take you along a few pretty major projects like installing the engine bays, building and mounting the rudder tubes, and filling out the final frames all the way to the transom! And of course no discussion of aluminum would be complete without touching on how it stacks up compared to fiberglass. To put both materials to the test, we conduct a destruction test which was very ummmm *cough* educational….(and we might have had some fun running stuff over with a forklift and smashing away with a hammer).
