BIZARRE things 1 NM Offshore | Scuba Diving Isla Mujeres | SV Delos Ep 334

We see a lot of strange things underwater, but this has to be the strangest! We heard a rumor of bizarre objects about 1 mile offshore from Isla Mujeres. With some possible GPS coordinates in hand we decide to spend the morning searching. Imagine swimming along and finding a sunken car, then a bunch of kneeling headless statues, then a group of coral-covered people. What the heck is going on here? Well you’ll need to watch to find out :). After returning from our exploration mission we comment on how nothing has broke on Delos in a while. Well, we should have kept our mouths shut because we had a major system failure involving the generator, toilets, AC, and even the water maker. With temperatures over 100F we start troubleshooting right away to pinpoint the problem hopping for a common point of failure. Would you jump in this strangers car? Mexican Roadtrip! SV Delos Ep 333

A random encounter takes us on a road trip across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico! Coming back from drinking margaritas we find a local boat tied up next to our dock in Isla Mujeres. Her skipper was named Susan, and she randomly offered to take us on a road trip of her favorite sites. We find sometimes that just accepting random offers leads to an incredible experience, and this was no exception. Our first stop is Ek Balam, where we explore the amazing Mayan Civilization and learn about this once thriving culture. After a few more hours of driving we find ourselves swimming in the underground caverns known locally as Cenotes, and finish up the day with a private tour and incredible meal at a hacienda turned into an amazing resort. Thanks so much Susan, the tour was awesome šŸ™‚ PS- Next weeks video released @ https://www.patreon.com/posts/55404006 so schhhhheck it out right now!

LAND HO MEXICO! Trapped in Quarantine with these two… SV Delos Ep 332

We make landfall in Mexico only to be immediately quarantined onboard. Kazza discovers a long forgotten alcohol stash in the bilge and we devise a plan to remedy the situation before customs arrives on Monday! We raise Taylor’s Canadian crew flag, and spend our time drinking Margaritas and Pina Coladas. It’s tough but someone has to do it… Before we know it Monday rolls around and we clear customs. I decide to rent a golf cart to go on a taco run where we actually run into a local dude named Juan, who’s actually been searching for us. It turns out Juan is not only a Nacho Libre impersonator and Delos Tribe member, but a pretty damn good tour guide also. He takes us on an amazing island adventure filled with turtles, tacos, beaches and of course cerveza!!!!

Pinch Me, Am I Dreaming? Sail to Mexico Part II – SV Delos ep 331

Days like this make me wonder… Will I pinch myself and wake up from a dream? Powering through the seas 150 NM offshore we experience one of those days we wish would never end. We decide the conditions are ideal for some mid-ocean spinnaker action. We drag the huge sail out of the bow locker, drop the genoa, and set ourselves up for some amazing downwind sailing. Just as we think the day canā€™t get any better we get visited by a playful pod of dolphins that spend hours frolicking in our bow wake. Baby Nugs goes nuts and does a happy dance to celebrate! As night sets in we drop the kite and set sail for building conditions, which turns out to be a good plan as overnight the wind builds to 20 knots. We find ourselves powering through the seas with an incredibly comfortable motion and Taylor decides to try her Night hand steering skills in the building swells. By morning we find ourselves about 20 NM from Mexico and getting absolutely hammered by the current, but Delos is built for these conditions and powers through to the other side of the Gulf Stream. A few minutes later we spot Mexico and enter the crystal clear waters of Isla Mujeres! Please check out Taylor’s Channel.

Off to a Rough Start. 300 NM Sail to Mexico Part I- SV Delos Ep 330

Things don’t start smoothly for our 300 nautical mile passage to Mexico. After waiting for a decent weather window we hoist sail and head straight out into the Gulf Stream. The seas are steep and confused and Baby Nugs loses her breakfast. Twice in fact šŸ™ We decide to hoist both downwind sails to stabilize Delos and gain speed, and soon are making amazing progress in a perfect 15 knots of wind. Delos and crew are in the groove and we have an incredible day of pure downwind sailing. Day turns to night and Brian brakes down the night watch rules for new crew Taylor. The moon rises and we have a fantastic night of moonlit downwind sailing before the wind changes and we’re forced to drop sail and gybe to get back on course. To be continued in part 2!

Race Against Time! Disabled Sailboat Hard Aground in Seaplane landing zone. SV Delos ep 329

It’s 5:30AM and squalls are ripping through the anchorage. A sailboat drags past us and ends up hard aground on the beach. Now it’s a race against time to get her off and afloat before the tide drops leaving them stranded in the Dry Tortugas Seaplane landing zone! The only problem is they have no windlass and their dinghy painter has jammed up the prop- leaving them without power and disabled.

After an incredible downwind sail we find ourselves back in the Dry Tortugas, waiting for a weather window to make the 300 mile sail to Mexico. The weather is incredibly calm and we find ourselves taking advantage by paddle boarding and scuba diving our hearts out. All is well until a front moves through and puts the entire anchorage on a lee shore. A few boats drag right past us without event but then in the middle of the night one actually ends up on the beach. It’s all hands on deck to get our gear and assist with our neighbors to literally winch them back into deeper water using our spare anchors and line.

Day in the Life – 12 Hours of Spinnaker Bliss! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep 328

We sail away from the disaster “bowling alley” anchorage of Key West! We’re full of provisions and conditions are PERFECT so we hoist the kite and show our new crew Taylor the ropes, quite literally. After 12 amazing hours of downwind sailing bliss we arrive back in the Dry Tortugas where we’ll wait for a weather window to make the 300 mile crossing to Mexico. We whip up some drinks, grab the slack line, and head into the beach for a well earned afternoon of sundowners and laughs with friends.

BOAT CRASH Disaster & Taylor Joins the Crew! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 327

Welcome Taylor to the crew! SCREAMING and a loud CRASH from our neighbors boats smashing together interrupts our welcome breakfast. I run outside to see what’s going on to find 3 boats being smashed together by the wind and currents. A boat has broken loose, taking two more with it, and they’re dragging FAST. Deciding this is more pressing than the Hollandaise sauce I’m whipping up we take off in Maggie to play tugboat and help by pushing the boats apart and resetting their new hooks. It’s quite an exciting first morning having our new crew onboard, Taylor who just joined the day before. Then the next night it happens to Delos herself. After 4 days solidly set our anchor breaks free and we find ourselves dragging. It’s an all our race to pick up and reset the hook before we smash into our neighbors and the shallows reefs around us.

BOAT WORK- B&G Halo 20+ Radar and Zeus 3S 9 Chart plotter FULL INSTALL

We do a full install of our new B&G Halo 20+ Radar, Zeus 3S 9 Chartplotter, and Triton 2 Sailing Displays. Since having Sierra onboard sailing and watch keeping has become more difficult as we find our attention divided between caring for The Little Nugget and Delos. Because of this we felt the need to upgrade our radar and chart plotter to a new B & G system with more manual controls and better radar zone and AIS alarms. We’re super excited to announce our partnership with B & G Sailing, and be using their radar, chart plotter, and instruments on SV Delos as we navigate our way south towards Panama šŸ™‚

Ā @B&G SailingĀ  makes marine radars, instruments, and chartplotters with features built specifically for sailors.

We really hope you learn something from the video, I know that I did! If you have any questions about the new system pop them below and I’ll do my best to answer!

ALL ALONE on This Island | Scuba Diving Dry Tortugas | Sailing Vessel Delos Ep 326

There’s nothing quite like realizing you’re the only souls on an entire island! In this episode we continue our exploration of the magical and remote dry tortugas. After a great nights sleep Kazza decides to take the paddle board out for a spin in the calm and sunny conditions and paddles right over a nurse shark. The shark isn’t spooked at all and she gets some great shots of it swimming under her. After taking care of our daily boat chores, like cleaning the bottom, we decide to go breath underwater and take Maggie out to the Wind Jammer Wreck. It’s an amazing experience to scuba dive such a huge sailboat from the era of working cargo sailing ships. The visibility is AMAZING and we’re surrounded by barracudas, schools of fish, and some incredibly healthy coral! After our dive we take Maggie out to Loggerhead Key and find ourselves completely along with the entire island, lighthouse, and beach to ourselves. The Little Nugs is in her element and absolutely loves exploring the beach while we take turns snorkeling. The weather takes a shift and we batten down the hatches for a 3 day blow where the winds are hitting 30 knots. We sit good and comfortable after moving Delos to a more protected spot. Finally, Brian goes on a night time-lapse mission and gets some incredible shots of the stars rotating behind Fort Jefferson!

This fort is an Isolated PARADISE! Sailing Vessel Delos ep. 325

At the very end of the Florida Keys lies an isolated paradise that is one of the smallest and most remote national parks in the US! The Dry Tortugas lie about 70 miles from Key West. We’d heard a lot of hype from other cruisers over the years so we decided to see it for ourselves. We set sail in the early morning on a 140NM, overnight sail from Rodriguez Key to make landfall early the next morning and the view at sunrise did not disappoint! We were greeted by crystal clear water and the immense Fort Jefferson looming on the horizon. Join us as we explore this incredibly well conserved area and learn about the strategic importance of Fort Jefferson to protect a fledgling America’s shipping interests.

Sailing South to the Keys! Wreck Diving USS Spiegel Grove | Sailing Vessel Delos ep 324

Delos feels like a dog let off her leash on the open ocean! With all our projects complete we hoist sail and set sail for the Florida Keys. Nothing feels better than crossing that last project off your list, stocking the boat with provisions, and heading out to sea. We set off for the first of the Florida Keys, Key Biscayne. Upon entering the pass we see a number of dilapidated structures built on stilts. It turns out this is called Stiltsville and people will do just about anything to gamble and drink out of the eyes of the authorities. After exploring the history of Stiltsville we get invited to go dive the USS Spiegel Grove, a 500 foot Korean War era landing craft docking ship that was sunk as an artificial reef. Diving on nitrox we have an amazing dive and get back into the groove of breathing underwater. Soon enough it’s time to head south, closer to our final destination in the Keys- The Dry Tortugas!

Dirty Sailors get Kicked Out. Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 323

After being reported to the planing and zoning commission we’re asked to leave our dock! It doesn’t matter though because it’s the perfect time to leave having finished most of our projects. With a canal width of 60 feet and Delos being 56 feet including the solar arch and anchor it doesn’t leave much room for a maneuver. We anchor in Lake Boca for the night, and after literally bumping into our friends on Calico Skies we decide to head south to HollyWood, FL to anchor right behind Papa SV Delos’s condo. I finally finish the downwind poles and just like that we are ready to hit the high seas! Destination- The Florida Keys.

A Makeshift Boatyard Operation | Autopilot Install – Sailing Vessel Delos ep 322

Our autopilot has steered us true, but now with over 100,000 miles on her itā€™s time to upgrade. Time to tackle some boat projects and prepare Delos for the next season offshore!

Our autopilot is crucial for our survival offshore, more so now than ever as watching The Little Nugget means Kazza is a single mom and Iā€™m a single handed sailor at sea. Weā€™ve put nearly 80,000 NM on Delos and the previous owner did 30,000 NM so itā€™s time to replace this crucial piece of gear. We start out by replacing the linear drive, then work our way forward with a new sensor pack, computer, and control head.

Amongst the boat projects we find time to do another crucial task- start Sierraā€™s swimming lessons! Last but not least we give the outside of Delos a little TLC making her hull glisten and replacing some of the original stickers from the start of the trip.

The big question- will we be able to stay until the work is finished or will the neighbors complain about a makeshift boatyard operation in their canal?

My Silly $5,000 Mistake! Sailing Vessel Delos ep 321

In a freak accident I lost our entire downwind whisker pole overboard. And now I get to build one from scratch. The big question- how much will it cost?

The cruisers code is kind of like the Good Samaritan law, except at sea! We begin this episode by helping our friends Bill & Grace on Ā @Calico Skies SailingĀ  sort out a problem with their fuel. After clogging 17 filters on the trip south I decided to pitch in and help them sort out the problem. Plus, itā€™s always fun working someone elseā€™s boat šŸ™‚

With Calico Skies in good shape we turn our eyes towards our own projects and move Delos to a friends dock in Boca Raton. We have a pretty fat project list, with building a new downwind whisker pole topping the list. The poles used on Delos are a custom design and not available off the shelf so I need to create a carbon copy of the pole I lost from scratch. After sourcing the raw materials I spend some time running from the metal warehouse to the machine shop to the fabricator. At least weā€™re making progressā€¦..

Papa SV Delos in da house | Florida Intracoastal Waterway – Ep. 320

ā€œHow are you feeling?ā€ Kazza asks my dad. His reply- ā€œWith my hands! Thatā€™s a Grandpa-ismā€¦ā€. And that pretty much describes having my dad, Papa SV Delos, onboard for a cruise through the iconic Intracoastal Waterway. In this episode we transit the ICW from Ft. Lauderdale to Boca Raton, doing our best to avoid hitting any bridges and running aground! With a mast height of nearly 70 feet we need to open all 10 bridges along the way. It’s never a dull moment onboard with my dad and his antics!

Running Aground from Place to Place – Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 319

“It’s a Manatee!!! The first one I’ve seen!” Kazza shouts with excitement. We just arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida and wake up to a beautiful and calm morning. We decide to take Baby Nugs to the beach to eat some sand, and while hanging out Kazza spots a Manatee just off the beach. After playtime is over I troubleshoot our alternator on the trusty Volvo that mysteriously stopped working on the passage down the coast. I don’t have any luck, and will have to order parts and finish that one up another day. Kazza decides to go shopping, leaving me in charge of Sierra for the afternoon which means we end up watching the police boat bust people, then head into the yacht club to eat some mud. Finally we sail Delos down to Ft. Lauderdale and go on the hunt for a dock space that can accomodate us which means shoving a paddle board inside my dad’s Camry and heading out on a mission with our portable depth sounder. Lot’s of funny things going on in this one!

Our Favorite Thing about the Cruising Lifestyle – Sailing Vessel Delos EP 318

Warm, sunshiny vibes beaming your way! We wake up to an incredibly beautiful morning in St. Augustine, Florida. Baby Nugs is mesmerized by the sight of her feet without socks, and Kazza and I are just as happy as well :). We take some time to explore St. Augustine and the historic fort standing guard over the river entrance. With only one sail remaining to see my family we set sail overnight.
