ALL ALONE In A Secret Cove 🤯 Off the Grid, Off the Charts…THIS IS LIVING! S.V. Delos Ep. 389

Finding these MIND BLOWING hidden corners of the world is why we live this lifestyle!

Life at sea certainly has its ebb and flow where it can seem really really tough, or so unbelievably charmed and magical. I wouldn’t use the words “good and bad” to describe these, because the challenges and struggles that living on boat presents is also what makes it so rewarding…but that being said, pretty much since leaving Panama, the pacific coast of Central America and Southern Mexico had felt pretty tough. While we had some AMAZING moments along the way, when we compare the last three months up the coast to three months in San Blas, it had an entirely different feeling to it. In this episode, we finally get a taste again of the charm and magic, and danggggg did it feel good!!! Even if it would be incredibly short lived as another tropical depression was riding right on our tail. So join us for our little three day escape from storm dodging and share in our pure bliss and happiness on this beautiful Friday 🥰

This NEVER Gets Easier 😢 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 390

The time has come again for another one of those hard episodes. This one is incredibly bittersweet for us…There is so much love, laughter, and good vibes in this episode as we welcome friends, family, and of course our lovely Patrons down to Puerto Vallarta to celebrate the completion of Brian’s first circumnavigation. But it’s also full of tears and heartbreak as we experience that familiar feeling that every sailor knows so well…the sadness that comes with goodbyes. It’s inevitable in this lifestyle, but that doesn’t make it any easier.

In addition to saying farewell to family at the end of their visit, it’s also time for Jordan to head off on her next adventure after 4 months and 2,000 miles. We had one helluva ride together, and if you didn’t know already Jordan has been working with us behind the scenes for the last couple years, so don’t worry you will definitely be seeing more of her in the future 😁 If you’d like to follow her adventures, check her out on instagram at @jordan_copp

Terrifying Night At Sea 😱 300 MILLION VOLTS Striking All Around Us ⚡️ Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 391

It was like an EXPLOSION in the sky as we navigated our way through squalls closing in all around us. It feels pretty vulnerable to be out there in the middle of the ocean with a 70 foot giant metal pole reaching up towards the electric sky from the middle of your home 😱

It was our first night out since departing from Puerto Vallarta on our 4 day passage to the Sea of Cortez, and it was definitely one of the more nerve wracking one’s we’ve had in a LOOOONG time. But luckily the following days brought us some pretty magical experiences, and it felt so good to be out of the marina and headed up to a part of the world that we’ve heard so many incredible things about. And when we finally made landfall and laid eyes on the alien like landscape all around us, it made the long sleepless nights all worthwhile!

Sailing our house to the DESERT…We Didn’t Expect THIS 🤯 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 392

It feels like we just landed on MARS! After our 4 day passage from Puerto Vallarta, we finally make landfall in one of the most alien like environments we’ve ever encountered in 13 years of sailing around the world. It’s so wild that we can spend the last few months in lush jungles like Panama and Costa Rica, and now here we are arriving in our floating home into a full on desert. But what’s even more fascinating is that the vast and barren landscape above the surface is such a sharp contrast to what lies under the surface of the sea. We dive an incredible shipwreck called the Feng Ming, and have one of the strangest and most incredible encounters with a sea turtle that we still can’t really explain.  Join us in this week’s episode for a first taste of how WILD the Sea of Cortez truly is.

TROUBLE IN PARADISE 😳 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 393

This week’s episode pretty much sums up boat life: Highs and lows in beautiful places, broken stuff, and unforgettable magic moments all mixed in between! We run into some tricky problems with the generator, which we depend on quite a bit these days for things like making water and running the AC for Sierra’s afternoon naps when temps hit about 100 degrees inside the boat. After a bit of trouble shooting I was pretty sure I knew what the problem was, but with no access to the replacement parts I had to get a little creative with the solution…I think a lot of you that enjoy the maintenance/repairs/technical stuff will find this one super interesting!

We also do our first night dive in YEARS on the Fang Ming which you saw us dive in last week’s episode with the frisky turtle. Night dives have always been a favorite of ours, but doing it on a wreck is an incredibly rare treat. Ship wrecks already have such a feeling of mystery and eeriness even during the day time, so when you add in the element of darkness and tunnel vision, it’s a seriously amazing experience.

This Is Why We Gave Up Everything and BOUGHT A BOAT! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 394

We’ve got another feel good episode comin’ at ya this week! It pretty much ticks all the boxes of what we love in an episode…good sailing conditions, adventures with our family and amazing friends, margaritas, and of course some boat work to balance everything out.

In this episode we go on our first proper land mission. We hike from one side of the island we were anchored at to the other via a stunning valley that is full of cacti everywhere. Something about the desert just feels incredibly special and fascinating, it’s so different than our usual cruiser habitat of white sandy beaches and palm trees. It’s pretty wild when we think about all the different environments Delos has been in over the last year…The rainforests and mangroves of Panama, a fresh water lake 85 feet above sea level in the middle of the Panama Canal, the wild jungle of Costa Rica with howler monkeys echoing through the anchorages, an all inclusive beach resort marina in one of the busiest tourist spots in Mexico, and now here we were in this magic wonderland where the desert meets the sea standing under a cactus that’s as tall as a house. Moment’s like these make us realize how truly special our lifestyle is, and we are so incredibly grateful to all of you for coming along on the journey with us!

Sailing 80° NORTH DOCUMENTARY – Where is Svalbard? (EP 1 of 4)

A few years ago, we went on a once in a lifetime sailing expedition into the Arctic Circle where we encountered gnarly and volatile conditions, calving glaciers, polar bears, walruses, beluga whales, some of the most insane landscapes we’ve ever witnessed, and so much more.  It was a truly unforgettable experience, and we captured it all and put together a 4 part docu-series which turned out to be our largest creative undertaking to date. We’re super proud of filming, editing, and producing this series of videos and wanted to make something above and beyond what you would normally find on YouTube. We’ve decided to release this series independently which as you might imagine is no small feat. Today we are beyond stoked to share Part 1 in it’s entirety with you on YouTube for the first time ever!  We hope you enjoy this first glimpse into an incredible part of our planet. If you’ like to watch the rest of the series, and support small and independent productions, please visit 80northseries.com where you’ll notice our “Pay What’s Fair” model. It’s just as easy as it sounds. Just type in the amount you’d like to pay to watch the rest of the series and that’s about it!

What happens when you take 8 warm weather sailors with 20 cameras and put them on a 48 foot sailboat in the High Arctic Wilderness for 3 weeks? Join us and watch this 4 part series dedicated to the expedition to find out! It’s 2 hours of pure sailing entertainment! Visit 80northseries.com to stream episodes 2, 3, and 4 right now!

Episode 1 – Where in the world is Svalbard!? (29 minutes):

Turns out, it took some investigating from these warm weather sailors to actually find out. The Crew of SV Delos flies into the high arctic and meets up with their new friends from SV Isbjorn. But before setting sail, they must get guns to protect themselves from polar bears, and provision enough food and liquor to hold them over in freezing temperatures for three weeks. Let the expedition begin!

Episode 2 – In the Blink of a Walrus’ Eye. (32 minutes):

After leaving the dock, these sailors quickly learn that the conditions of the Arctic can change in the blink of a walrus’ eye. Speaking of Walrus, the crew finds a huddle of these gargantuan creatures and learns first hand about their gnarly smells and sounds. After a not so pleasant encounter with a cruise ship, SV Isbjorn makes her way over to a massive calving glacier. It’s beauty enchants the crew just long enough to put their boat in the danger of a tidal ice flow that they now must navigate out of!

Episode 3 – Holy Sh*t! That’s A Lot Of Ice! (31 minutes):

The crew attempts to navigate SV Isbjorn out of an ice flow that could easily sink her to the bottom of the anchorage, and somehow has fun doing so. Their survival is rewarded with a visit from a polar bear mother and her young cub, who discover a thawed out whale carcass. The day of insanity continues when Beluga whales appear on the horizon just long enough to launch the drones!

Episode 4 – Sailing to the End of the Ocean (32 minutes):

Beluga whales on the horizon! With drones launched and a hydrophone dropped in the water, the crew quickly realizes why these creatures are known as the canaries of the sea. After 3 weeks of 8 people living on a 48 ft. Boat, these sailors reflect back on the pros and cons of sharing a small space with each other. A major goal is completed when they sail SV Isbjorn all the way to 80° North, a place that the Vikings call “The End of the Ocean”. With one final adventure of a polar plunge next to a Glacier, the crew wraps up the trip by admitting they are now addicted to the Arctic.

Is This SAFE? WILD SEA LION ENCOUNTER!!! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 395

Big BULLS Barking all around us, playful pups, the stench of rotting fish, and LOTS of mating! Say hello to the Sea Lions of Cortez!

After some of the best spinnaker sailing conditions we’ve had in ages, we arrive to Los Islotes, the southernmost Sea Lion rookery in the entire world. This rocky outcropping is not only incredibly beautiful, it’s also home to upwards of 500 California Sea Lions. We get up close and personal with some of its curious and playful residents in the middle of mating season, so it was pretty wild to say the least! And of course little Sierra was the most impressed of all by the antics.

And of after a few days of cruiser bliss, something was bound to break on board, so Brian digs into some more electrical system trouble shooting. Can you guess what failed this time??? 😂

The Quickest Way to RUIN an Anchorage…WTF?! 🤬 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 396

There’s a secret lurking here, waiting to TERRORIZE US 😱

We pull up to another picture perfect anchorage in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico surrounded by gorgeous clear water, immaculate beaches, cactus dotted hillsides and mountains…it wasn’t until the sun began to set that we realized what a grave mistake we had made by coming here. It’s so wild how something so tiny can absolutely DESTROY such an otherwise perfect paradise.

WE NEED A HOSPITAL 🚨 NO HELP In Sight…Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 397

ISOLATION. It’s one of the reasons we’ve chosen to spend our lives at sea…sailing thousands upon thousands of miles to explore the farthest reaches of the earth, finding little pockets of peace, solitude, and unbelievable beauty away from the hustle and bustle of civilisation. But what happens when things go wrong, and the same isolation you were seeking is now what stands between you and getting help when the person you love most in the world is having a medical emergency.

We’ve had a few other sketchy situations over the years, but this one really hit home and made us realize how vulnerable we really are when we’re off the grid. In this case we were about ten hours of travel away from medical care…but we’ve often been much further away from civilization like an ocean crossing for example. So as stressful as it was, looking back on it we felt so lucky that we were able to get the help we needed. And since many of you are current or future cruisers, we just wanted to also take this time to encourage you to make sure you have a thorough and well organized medical kit on board, and that you know what you have and how to use it. This is our go to resource that we keep on board, we highly recommend you pick up a copy or something similar. It’s called Advanced First Aid Afloat and it focuses on how to handle almost any medical situation you might encounter at sea without access to help from a medical professional. Here’s a link to find it on Amazon:

We also made an episode all about our medical kit and what we keep on board:

And we have a post on our website with a rundown of the contents of our medical kit plus lots of other great info (just scroll down a little bit to “Offshore Medical Kit”)

3 Boats, ONE DISASTER 😱 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 398

Boat life is full of ups and downs, but lately cruising has really been keeping us on our toes with challenge after challenge. So it wouldn’t be Friday without another crisis on board to share with you 😂 After Kazza made a full recovery from her scary run in with Salmonella poisoning, it finally felt like everything was right again in our floating world. So we let our hair down, whipped up some margaritas, and threw a raft up party to celebrate my amazing Swedish Princess’ birthday. But the next day, mother nature had a different present for us in mind, and things went sideways REAL fast.

Our WHOLE LIFE Is On The Line…Is this the RIGHT CALL? Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 399

When a Hurricane is headed towards your family, your home, your business, your entire life…What do you do? As captain of a boat, you make hundreds of decisions every day. Some big, some small, some inconsequential…but when the stakes are this high and the information available to you is changing by the hour, it’s a pretty heavy feeling knowing that this is one decision you ABSOLUTELY have to get right.

As Hurricane Kay began to develop, we quickly realized that we needed to start making some moves- not only to try and create distance between ourselves and its projected path, but also because our insurance would only cover  anything that might happen to Delos in a named storm if we were north of a certain latitude.  But the decision of how we should respond was far from easy to make- as forecasts changed and information started reaching us from other cruisers in different locations, our heads started to spin a bit.  This was an extremely exhausting time for us mentally and emotionally…the anticipation, the unknowns, the weight of the decisions that we needed to make, the preparation, the anxiety…We hope you enjoy this episode as we explore some of these feelings, share how we go about making decisions like these and processing the information available to us, and take you through how we prepare for the serious weather that was headed our way.

Terrified and Heartbroken…WE COULDN’T HELP THEM 🥺 Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 400

We hope you enjoy part 2 of our ordeal with Hurricane Kay. We prepared as best we could, and now there was nothing left to do but wait. It’s a pretty vulnerable feeling to just be sitting and waiting, unsure of what’s to come. Cruising life has presented us with all kinds of challenges over the years, but this has to be one of the most mentally tough ones we’ve faced, especially since having Sierra has really changed the way we see everything. The hardest part of it all was definitely seeing some of the other boats struggle and feeling helpless to do anything about it. Knowing that it’s someone’s hopes, dreams, maybe they worked their whole life to make it a reality…and now that dream is on the beach getting pounded by swell. It was heartbreaking to see. We are incredibly grateful to have come out from the whole experience unscathed, and we hope that those of you here that have your own boats or are working towards one in the future can learn valuable tips and lessons from this episode.

We REALLY Needed This! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 401

It’s been a while since we posted a video like this…No disasters, no storms, no hospital, just pure cruising bliss. We had forgotten what it was like to feel at ease, and man did we need this! And for all you Sierra fans out there, brace yourselves for some cuteness overload in this one 🥰

After all the chaos and stress of running from Hurricane Kay, the dust had finally settled and the seas had calmed, so we pull the anchor and set sail for Puerto Don Juan which is actually the anchorage we diverted away from at the last minute when we decided to opt for riding out the hurricane in San Carlos. We arrive to have our minds completely blown at the beauty and stillness of this sheltered paradise. It was such a relief to feel safe, secure, and relaxed, and we able to slip right back into the cruiser life with a bon fire on the beach, some wild coyote encounters, and of course no return to normalcy would be complete without at least one system failure onboard 😂

Jumping Ship for the Day! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 402

The END is near, we can’t believe it! After another 6 months and 3,000+ miles, another sailing season is almost over. This one has been special because it’s the first time that we’ve really buddy boated. It was so incredible having our friends from Calico Skies and One Life by our side for the majority of the trip. We were all preparing to haul out and go our seperate ways for a few months, so we thought it would only be fitting to go out in style with a big blowout all together.

We kicked things off with a crew swap. We get a bit spoiled on Delos because everything is so familiar and easy, so it’s always fun to switch things up! After some pretty glorious conditions, we arrive to our next anchorage which will be the site for a battle of epic proportions the next day…the Adult Summer Camp Grand Finale! With plenty of lubricants to get the athletic juices flowing, we have a pretty ridiculous day of drunken games complete with a half time show that would make Rihanna herself jealous, followed by an occasion for Brian to finally bust out his rhinestone bow tie!

Mexico’s most WILD and REMOTE Island? (We’re Falling in Love Here) Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 403

We’re falling in love here! We’ve seen some pretty crazy destinations during our 13 year trip around the world, but this has to be one of the most jaw droppingly beautiful places we’ve ever laid eyes on. During his expedition through the Sea of Cortez in 1940, John Steinbeck wrote of this magical part of the world “the very air here is miraculous, and outlines of reality change with the moment. The sky sucks up the land and disgorges it. A dream hangs over the whole region, a brooding kind of hallucination”.  After several months of sailing through this incredible region, no spot has embodied his words more than our latest destination, Refugio. With it’s insane cactus dotted landscapes, rugged beaches littered with skulls, friendly locals, and topography that’s equally as stunning above and below the surface, Refugio showed us what it’s like to experience one of the world’s truly wild places. And to top it all off we had some pretty ideal sailing conditions to get there.

We arrive to this wild paradise to discover empty beaches littered with skeletons and skulls, curious and playful sea lions that welcomed us into their under water world, and the most insane views around every corner. Places like these are the reason why we choose to spend our lives at sea, and we hope you enjoy this very special part of the world with us.

NERVOUS! Lifting our 20 TON Boat Home Out of the Water! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 404

This hasn’t gotten any less SCARY for us 🙈 Even though it’s our 9th time pulling Delos out of the water, it’s still such a nerve racking experience…there are just so many things that can go really really wrong. You’re basically asked to steer your boat into a narrow, concrete like bunker with a gigantic machine looming over head. There’s usually some old tires and rusty bits of metal waiting to impale your vessel should anything go wrong. So you approach slowly and if you have timed the tides correctly you glide over the slings, and stop just before ramming your bow into the wall, or your forestay into the machine’s cross brace (both of which are considered bad form 😂 ) As the machine tightens the slings and starts to take the weight, it’s a surreal experience to feel yourself and your boat lifted out of the water supported by only a few straps and pins.

Hauling Delos out of the water marks the end of our 11th season of sailing. It feels like SO LONG ago that we cast the lines in Shelter Bay and began the 3,000+ mile journey from the Panama Canal up to the northern end of the Sea of Cortez. Our time being back in the Pacific ocean has pretty much mirrored what we’ve found to be true about cruising in general- alternating between the highest highs and the lowest lows, sometimes even simultaneously. While we’d had some pretty big challenges during this time (Hurricanes, Salmonella poisoning, and basically the entire coast of Costa Rica spring to mind) overall it’s been a pretty special and unforgettable season for us, and just seeing how much Sierra has grown and developed during this time is pretty mind blowing! But it feels great to close another chapter and make way for an exciting new one as we prepare to cross the Pacific Ocean again!
