RIDICULOUS Anchor Fees! Would you pay? SV Delos Ep 373

We’re about to visit the most expensive place in the entire world we’ve ever been charged to drop our hook. Normally anchoring is free, or a few dollars at most. But we’re heard of a super remote and well preserved island in Panama that charges ridiculous fees of hundreds of dollars per night- just to drop the hook. It is worth it to pay this much? Will we regret our decision to spend a few days at Isla Coiba exploring and scuba diving? We set out to explore and dive one of the most famous islands on the Pacific Coast of Panama and answer these questions.

GIGANTIC Mahi-Mahi! Babes, Fishing, and Sailing SV Delos EP 372

Untie from the dock, set up the deep sea fishing gear, and point the bow at the horizon. It feels amazing to be back in the Pacific Ocean! Moments after setting out we find Delos surrounded by 4 whales, then before the excitement can die down the whir of the rod jolts us into action. FISH ON!!! we scream. I’m a little rusty as the fishing was less than hot on the other side… But finally we remember how to do it and land a beautiful mackerel, followed by an amazingly huge mahi-mahi to boot. We successfully round Punta Mala, do a quick surf and head towards Isla Coiba for a week of scuba diving.

WE FINALLY MADE IT!!! Panama Canal MINI DOCO (Part 2 of 2) SV Delos Ep 371

Imagine being woken up by Howler Monkeys in the middle of a man-made lake in the Panama Canal, then going for a swim in the crocodile infested waters! In part 1 of our Panama Canal mini-series we learned how the incredible locking system raises gigantic ships, and small sailboats, to 85 feet above sea level. In this video we transit Lake Gatun, a manmade mega-lake created by damn that is an engineering feet in and of itself. We investigate the decision behind creating Lake Gatun, the immense proportions of the damn that holds back the Chagres River, and the incredibly challenge of the Culebra Cut which claimed the lives of so many. At the end of the day we successfully traverse the locks back down to sea-level and end up in THE PACIFIC Ocean!

PANAMA CANAL by SAILBOAT – How It Works MINI DOCO (Part 1 of 2) SV Delos Ep 370

How does a sailboat get 85 ft above sea-level and through the Panama Canal? Moving your house from one ocean to another is no small feat! We embark on an adventure from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and show you how it’s done by sailboat including the history and immense effort taken to construct the Panama Canal and the locking process, all while doing our best to not get run over by giant ships.

Catch & Cook: ALMOST SMASHED by a 500 LB Cave Monster! SV Delos Ep 369

What’s it like to catch your own food, build a beach fire, and cook it under the stars with amazing friends? In today’s video we follow Plukky into a system of cracks and caverns in the outer reef. I accidentally corner a Goliath Grouper twice my size and nearly get smashed when it freaks out. We make some great friends with the local Kuna and donate a solar charging system to their village. It’s time to leave our beloved San Blas and we prepare to set sail for the Panama Canal!

CROC HUNTERS of San Blas. SV Delos Ep 368

We go in search of the one thing that’s really scary out here- saltwater crocodiles! We sail back to the Holandes Island Group and meet up with our crazy Australian friends we haven’t seen in years. Plukky from Sailing Into Freedom shows up as well. It doesn’t take long before we fall into the groove of exploring and debauchery. During a day time exploration we find traces of a croc on the beach and then actually spot it swimming! With the Australian contingent edging us on we can’t help but go on a night mission in search of these amazing creatures 🙂

BAD NEWS to mess this up! Reef Labyrinth & Traditional Kuna Village SV Delos Ep 367

We decide to sail through a labyrinth of uncharted reefs while trying to explore a traditional Kuna Village! After weeks of exploring the outer islands we get word of a Kuna Independence Celebration, and apparently it’s cool if we rock up and join the festivities. So we pull up the hook and set sail East to Isla Tigres, a Kuna Village of about 1,500 people. After a very sporty sail through a bunch of reefs we arrive to find the celebration starting early in the morning. It’s a full on reenactment of the battle that gained the Kuna People their autonomy from the Panamanian government and a very interesting story. We learned a lot and hope you do too!

Perfectly Cooked Eyeball & A Broken Toilet. SV Delos Ep 366

What does a broken toilet, a perfectly cooked eyeball , and kite surfing all have in common? We wake up to find ourselves in a picture perfect anchorage known as the Hot Tub. My morning routine is interrupted by a terrible noise from the forward head. Yep, it’s a code brown…. Well there goes my peaceful morning. The day greatly improves as we find ourselves exploring our very own little island, which we share with nothing more than a few pelicans. Seirra becomes a beachcomber and collects a bunch of treasures before we drag her back home, only to return shortly to a beach-cruiser BBQ where Plukky feeds Kazaa a perfectly cooked fish eyeball. My day only improves when Plukky convinces me to quite work early for the day and instead head out for a kiting session!

KICKED OUT – A Strange encounter in San Blas. – SV Delos Ep. 365

We try to tread lightly in the places we travel, and respect the local laws and traditions. But sometimes things go sideways. In today’s video we decide to leave the outer islands of the San Blas and anchor close to a large non-traditional Kuna Village. We start out by exploring a local river (Rio Diablo) by dinghy. Everything is going to plan until we realize that the water level is incredibly low and the river becomes too shallow for our dinghy. We eventually run aground and have a quick swim before retreating downstream. Nothing ventured nothing gained but we end up having a great time. Then things take a sudden turn. Needing fresh fruit and vegetables we venture into the closest village of Nargana, where our friend Julian we met in the river says he owns a fruit and vegetable stand. Upon approaching the dock we are waved away and told to dock on the other side of the bridge on another island. We go ashore to find an eerily abandoned feeling village blasting music with not a soul to be seen. Wandering around looking for someone to talk to we are approached by a man that says the entire village is closed off to everyone. He gives no explanation other than that. He tells us to leave immediately, instead we end up convincing him to go shopping on our behalf. It was one of our strangest encounters out here, in a place where we have been normally met with nothing but friendly people. You can’t win them all I suppose. Not liking the vibe we return to Delos with our meager supply of carrots and onions and set sail, not really knowing where we are going. Just knowing that we didn’t want to stay. Such is Sailing Life sometimes.

NOMADIC & FREE: Family Life at Sea! SV Delos Ep. 364

Constant travel has it’s pro’s and con’s, just like everything in life and we alter our routine to keep things fresh. After weeks alone drifting from island to island we decide to join the social cruising scene of San Blas, Panama. We sail to Isla Cambombia in search of fellow sailors, fresh vegetables, and also a bit of Kuna Mola shopping. We get restless quickly and move to another anchorage where we discover a magical island perfect for exploring and snorkeling!

Parents Gone WILD! Is Snorkeling a Date? SV Delos Ep 363

After a few days exploring the surrounding islands we begin our undersea exploration. Fellow cruiser and friend Hannah is willing to take Sierra off our hands for the day! So we dedicate the day to exploring under the surface. The amount of diversity here is incredible and on a short swim around the island we spot dozes of species, all living their own interdependent lives. Hope you enjoy! If you had a week to spend on a Deserted Island what would you do? We anchor Delos at the incredible uninhabited Coco Bandero Cays, San Blas, Panama and make a plan to sink into the sand for the next week or so. We begin by exploring the beach, meeting the local fisherman, and cooking an amazing lobster dinner.

DELOS Vs. PARLAY! (Bluewater Cruiser Vs. Lagoon 450) – SV Delos Ep 361

How does a big ole’ cruising ketch match up against a production catamaran? We meet up with our buddy Colin from  @Sailing Parlay Revival  in San Blas, Panama for a weekend of messing around in boats. When two boats and crews get together it’s always a race, and in this case an entire regatta 🙂 There’s sailing, beach fires, drinks, laughs, and lot’s of friends made. A huge thanks to https://www.instagram.com/lifeofjacob/ and  @Sailing Parlay Revival  for sharing all the amazing footage and especially drone shots!

Incredible Island Paradise Found! We Might NEVER Leave San Blas. SV Delos Ep 360

We make it to the paradise of San Blas, Panama and promptly consider never leaving! Our first stop in this incredible spot is Cayos Chichime, where we immediately head into the beach to stretch our legs. We find swaying palm trees, golden colored beaches, and gin-clear water. The locals are super friendly and I buy a gigantic lobster to celebrate our anniversary dinner! On the outer reef a gigantic wreck looms, which begs to be explored. It’s the San Blas Ferry, once the Grand Manan Ferry from way up north. It’s an incredible story how it ended up washed up on this reef, and you’ll have to watch the video to find out how! After a few days in this chill spot we set sail to Cayos Holandes to meet up with our buddy Colin from Parlay Revival for a weekend cruiser regatta.

Sea-Sick as a DOG Sailing to San Blas Panama. – SV Delos Ep. 359

In this episode we explore the nature of seasickness, and with the sea-state resembling a washing machine we have our task cut out for us. With 200 NM ahead of us we set sail at night to make our passage to the San Blas Islands. Instead of a sailing family we become a puking family and struggle to safely navigate Delos, while taking care of a sick baby, all while we feel like we’re going to toss our cookies ourselves! In the end we pull it together and make landfall at sunrise in the amazing San Blas Islands!

Swarmed by Cayucos & The Coconut Telegraph in Effect! SV Delos Ep 358

Months of planning and preparation are complete and we’re off the dock and cruising again! Topped up with veggies and fruit we immediately depart Bocas Del Toro for the San Blas Islands. En-route we end up in BlueField Lagoon, a little known but very calm and peaceful lagoon in the middle of no where. We’re immediately swarmed by Cayucos who are excited and surprised to see us. They sell us lobster, and ask for pencils and books for their kids. I decide to take a picture with our instant camera and word spreads like wild fire! Before we know it Delos is swarmed by cayucos all wanting to have their photo taken. The Coconut Telegraph is in full effect and word is spreading FAST 🙂 Right up until I run out of instant camera film. We also get taken to a pretty sweet waterfall by a couple of kids that’s actually in their backyard.

Sadly 😭THIS ISN’T a Coral Reef 🐠 SV Delos Ep 357

We find an unexpected surprise on the bottom of Delos 🙂  The race to get off the dock heats up! We tackle the last of our project list which includes cleaning Delos’s bottom which has turned into an artificial reef of sorts. I’ve never seen anything like this! The soft growth is at least 8 inches long in places and it takes a few hours of hard work to clean her up. We head into town for a quick provisioning mission and I fix a last minute fuel leak before we finally untie the lines and back to our natural place floating around!

I can’t believe we found it! SV Delos Ep 356

After hearing a rumor of a bat cave running deep under the island we decide to seek it out. We spend the afternoon searching by dinghy and finally run across a man living on the edge of the jungle with his family. It just so happens that the cave is on his families land and he’s willing to guide us! He leads us through a narrow, winding jungle river followed by a muddy walk through the jungle where we find the entrance to the cave. We put on our cave gear (swim suits and headlamps) and are led through the darkness into a cave full of spiders and bats complete with a river running through it! After another 30 minutes of walking we reach the end of the cave and take a swim in a cold fresh water pool. Sierra loves it!
